Before buying a PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2, start with the games you most want to play and verify each one on the manufacturer’s compatibility page. Then check the exact console model, physical or digital format, accessories, account and subscription continuity, and the price and bundle available in your region. A console being late in its generation does not, by itself, show whether it is good value for you.
Check your must-play games first
Make a short list of the games you expect to play, including their exact editions, then confirm compatibility on the official pages for PS4 games on PS5 and Switch games on Switch 2. Compatibility is not a guarantee that every feature, peripheral, or upgrade works the same way.
PlayStation 5
Sony says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. The “4,000+” figure is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s description of the catalog; the support page does not state a year for that figure. Some PS4 features may not be available on PS5, while some titles may benefit from Game Boost. Check the individual game if a specific mode or feature matters to you.
Nintendo Switch 2
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible because the systems have different hardware. Some games have free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2; those are distinct from basic compatibility. Check the title-specific guidance before treating an owned Switch game as a guaranteed equivalent on the newer system.

Match the console model to the games you own
Physical games and PlayStation
If you own PS4 discs, confirm that the PS5 model you plan to buy has a disc drive. Sony’s guidance covers PS4 discs on compatible PS5 consoles; a digital-only model cannot use a disc as the route to play that game. For digital purchases, follow Sony’s account and library instructions to access eligible games.
Physical and digital games on Nintendo
Nintendo’s Switch-to-Switch 2 guidance covers compatible physical and digital games. Check the specific game and how you own it rather than assuming every cartridge, digital purchase, or game feature will transfer identically. If you use virtual game cards, Nintendo says they can be managed across two Switch 2 or Switch consoles at a time, subject to its instructions.

Older PlayStation generations
The PS5-to-PS4 compatibility guidance does not establish that PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs work on PS5. If those older discs are central to your purchase decision, do not infer support from PS4 compatibility; verify the specific title and format through current official information.

Check accessories and features you want to carry over
Compatibility can depend on both the game and the accessory. Make an inventory before buying, then check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for each item you intend to keep.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- PlayStation controllers: Sony describes DualShock 4 and licensed controller support for supported PS4 games. Do not assume an older controller works with every PS5 game.
- PlayStation VR: Sony identifies specific requirements for PS VR play, including a PS VR headset and specified PS4 camera equipment with an adapter. Check the current instructions for your equipment before counting it as reusable.
- Nintendo accessories and features: Nintendo’s guide covers Switch software, accessories, and features. Confirm the exact item and game; the page does not promise universal accessory transfer.
- Storage and other peripherals: Verify the precise model’s requirements before buying a storage device, headset, camera, or other add-on. A product that worked with the previous console is not automatically compatible with its successor.
Understand accounts, libraries, and memberships
PlayStation
For digitally owned PS4 games, check that you can use the account associated with the purchases and follow Sony’s instructions for accessing them on PS5. Confirm any game-specific upgrade conditions separately; an upgrade may be limited to eligible titles and can be paid rather than free.
Nintendo
Nintendo says linked Nintendo Accounts work on Switch 2, eShop funds are shared across linked systems, and an existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can be used on linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. Some benefits are specific to Switch 2, so check whether a particular feature is included on the system you plan to use.

Check your local retailer listing for current availability and the platform’s official news for announcements.
