A sale price is only a good deal if the exact TV fits your room, supports the devices and content you use, and still makes sense after delivery and setup costs. Before ordering, verify the model code and compare its size, display, HDR, gaming features, ports, and purchase terms—not just the screen diagonal or discount.

Will the TV fit your room?

TV screen size is measured diagonally, not by the width of the set. Check the exact model’s published width and height, including whether those dimensions include its stand, then measure the furniture or wall where it will go. If using a stand, confirm the stand’s footprint and position of its feet; for wall mounting, check the mounting pattern, TV weight, wall construction, and compatible mount.

Consider viewing distance as well as physical space. Consumer NZ advises choosing a size in relation to room and viewing distance, and notes that a TV can look smaller in a showroom than it does at home. Its TV buying guide covers these sizing considerations. Don’t let a steep discount or showroom impression make the decision for you.

What picture specifications matter?

Resolution

Consumer NZ defines 4K/UHD as 3840 × 2160 pixels. That describes resolution, not the overall quality of a particular TV: display technology, content, and the exact model’s implementation matter too. Check the listing and manufacturer specifications for the precise size and model you intend to buy.

Display technology

OLED pixels emit their own light, while LED TVs use a backlight. QLED adds a quantum-dot layer to an LED-family display. These labels explain broad differences in display approach, but they do not replace model-specific comparisons of picture performance, features, and price. Crutchfield’s TV types guide explains the distinctions.

HDR support

HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ are different formats, and support can vary between TVs and the sources that deliver content. Check which formats the exact TV supports and whether your streaming services, players, or discs provide the formats you want. An HDR label by itself is not a guarantee of picture quality. Consumer NZ explains the format differences in its HDR guide.

Will it work with your devices and games?

Count the connections you need

Make a list of devices you plan to connect: for example, a game console, receiver or soundbar, set-top box, and streaming device. Compare that list with the TV’s HDMI port count, allowing for devices you may add later. Check the capabilities of each port rather than assuming every HDMI socket supports every advertised feature.

Verify gaming features on the exact ports

If you play games, check the model’s native refresh rate and whether the HDMI ports you plan to use support the features you need, such as 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low latency mode (ALLM). Confirm the relevant features work together on the intended inputs; a feature mentioned in a product family’s marketing may not apply to every size or port. The Good Guys’ Australian TV buying guide and LG India’s 2026 TV buying guide discuss gaming-related specifications.

Is the sale listing for the model you think it is?

Before comparing prices, record the full model code, screen size, model year or generation, and regional variant. Match those details between the retailer listing and the manufacturer’s documentation. Similar product-family names do not ensure identical specifications: screen sizes within one family can differ in resolution, refresh rate, or HDMI configuration. Roku’s TV model comparison chart illustrates why checking the exact model matters; it also notes that included quick-start documentation can vary by purchase location.

A prior-year model may be worth considering if its specifications still meet your needs. Consumer NZ suggests looking at last season’s models for a lower-cost option, but an older listing is not automatically a bargain: verify its identity, condition, and seller terms before ordering. What will the TV really cost, and what are the terms?

Compare the final cost, not only the sale price. Add delivery to the room, installation, wall mounting, and any accessories you actually need. A wall mount is an additional purchase for some setups; check compatibility with the TV’s weight and mounting pattern and with your wall. A soundbar may be useful if you want a separate audio system, but it is not a required purchase for everyone.

Before checkout, read the specific seller’s terms for the item you are buying. Confirm the return period, who pays return shipping or arranges collection for a large item, the warranty, and whether the TV is new, open-box, or refurbished. Those details can vary by retailer, country, and condition; do not assume a return right or warranty term applies everywhere. Tom’s Guide’s OLED deal coverage highlights that refurbished condition, warranty, and return shipping can vary. Prices and offers change, so confirm current details directly in the retailer’s listing and terms.

How to compare two sale TVs

If more than one model fits your room, compare the same details for each before choosing:

Check What to compare
Fit Exact width, height, stand footprint or mounting requirements, and viewing distance.
Display Resolution and display technology, alongside the picture needs of your room and content.
HDR Supported HDR formats matched to the streaming, disc, or other sources you use.
Gaming Native refresh rate and the gaming features supported on the specific HDMI ports you will use, if gaming matters to you.
Connections Number of HDMI ports and the capabilities of the ports your devices require.
Total cost and terms Sale price plus delivery, installation, mounting, or desired audio equipment, along with return, warranty, and condition terms.

Consumer NZ’s September 2026 TV buying guide puts the practical issue plainly: “Don’t buy a TV that’s the wrong size or doesn’t have enough ports.” Read its guide for further buying considerations.
