Before buying a foldable phone, test the hinge, inspect the inner screen, confirm the exact model’s dust and water limits, and get a local repair estimate for the inner display and hinge. A crease is generally an expected feature of a flexible display; it is not the same as a crack or a screen that has stopped responding. Fold-cycle figures published by manufacturers describe tests, not a promised service life, and repair costs depend on the model, location, warranty, and service route.
What to check on the phone before you buy
Move the hinge through its full travel
Open and close the phone several times. Notice whether resistance feels smooth and consistent and whether the two halves align as expected when open and closed. Do not assume every curve, small clearance, click, or snagging sensation signals a defect: Samsung says the Fold5 and Flip5 hinge has clearances for movement and shock absorption, and that friction can cause clicking or snagging sensations. Inspect the inner display under different light
Look at the unfolded screen in ordinary room light and under brighter or direct light, then check touch response and brightness across the display. A crease can become more visible in direct light. Samsung describes the Fold5 crease as a normal characteristic of its flexible Ultra Thin Glass design; its support advice is to seek help if the crease appears significantly deeper or uneven. Verify the rating and exclusions for the precise model rather than assuming foldables share the same protection. Samsung says the cited Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 are IPX8 water-resistant but not dust-resistant, and advises keeping them away from sand and small particles. Ask about the inner-screen film
For the Fold3 and Flip3, Samsung advises leaving the main-display film attached and using authorized service if it comes loose. Do not assume a standard glass protector or generic replacement film is suitable for a folding inner screen. For another model, follow that manufacturer’s specific film and replacement instructions. What fold-cycle claims do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturers publish fold-cycle figures for particular devices and test conditions. They can help explain what was tested, but they are not an independent forecast of how many years a specific buyer’s phone will last.

Neither figure establishes a general failure rate across foldables or guarantees a particular owner’s outcome. The cited Samsung support pages cover those named generations; they do not establish the durability of every later model or another brand’s design.
Find the real repair cost before committing
Ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider for a current estimate in your country for the exact model. Request separate details for the inner display and hinge, and ask whether those parts are serviced together as an assembly. Also confirm parts availability, expected turnaround, and whether accidental damage is excluded from the standard warranty.

There is no comparable, current out-of-warranty price by model and geography in the cited material, so a general repair figure would be misleading. Motorola’s US support page says repair costs vary with repair type, chosen service option, warranty status, and MotoCare plan; that describes its US support context and is not a quote for every model or country. Independent teardown evidence can help assess repair complexity, but it is not a retail repair estimate. iFixit’s 2026 Galaxy Z Fold8 teardown gives that phone a provisional repairability score of 4 out of 10, describes the assumed hinge/display assembly repair path as extensive, and reports scarce Fold7 replacement parts at the time of its article. Compare a protection plan with paying for repairs yourself
Read the actual plan terms available for your location and device. Compare the covered failures and accidental damage, deductible, claim limits, enrollment deadline, and whether a claim leads to repair or replacement. Samsung links to Care+ from its support material, but availability and terms need checking for the exact market and model. Motorola’s US support page describes separate mechanical-breakdown and accidental-damage plans with device-dependent deductibles; do not carry those US terms over to another country or phone. - Does the hinge move smoothly and align as expected?
- Is the inner screen responsive, and is the crease acceptable to you in the lighting where you normally use the phone?
- What dust and water protection does this exact model claim, and what does it exclude?
- What does the warranty exclude, especially for accidental damage?
- Is authorized repair available locally, and are genuine parts available?
- Are the hinge and inner display repaired together or separately, and what is the current local estimate?
- What deductible, limits, and repair or replacement route apply under an accidental-damage plan?
- How much repair downtime and out-of-pocket cost could you tolerate?
These checks help compare real candidates, but the available evidence does not establish one foldable as universally best or quantify the chance that a given hinge will fail.
