Before buying a cheap Android tablet, confirm it runs the apps you need, has enough performance and storage for your tasks, and will receive software support for long enough to suit you. Then compare the screen, connections, included accessories, and the seller’s return and warranty terms for the exact model and configuration. A low price is useful only if the tablet fits the way you plan to use it.
Start with what you need the tablet to do
Reading, browsing, video, and basic schoolwork usually put different demands on a tablet than gaming, drawing, or keeping several apps open at once. Budget models may trade off processor performance, display quality, storage speed, multitasking, accessories, or software support. Decide which of those compromises would actually affect your use before comparing specifications.
“Cheap” has no universal price definition. iTechGuides’ 2025 US buying guide used approximately $100 to $300 as its own frame for a new tablet; treat that as a dated, regional editorial definition, not a current market-wide price range. Compare current local prices and the cost of any accessories you need.
Confirm the operating system and app access
Check the exact listing for the operating system, regional model number, and app store. A conventional Android tablet with Google Play is not the same app ecosystem as a Fire tablet running Fire OS. Lenovo’s cited Tab datasheet, for example, lists Google apps and the Play Store; the buyer guide notes that Google Play is not included by default on its Fire tablet example.

Before checkout, search for every app you rely on, such as Google Classroom, a banking app, a particular game, a streaming service, or an accessibility tool. Confirm not just that an app appears in a store, but that it supports the tablet’s software version and is available in your country.
Check software support for the exact model
Do not assume a manufacturer’s support policy for one device family applies to every tablet or regional variant. Google’s Android Help says, “Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier.” Look up the manufacturer’s published commitments for the precise model and check both planned Android-version upgrades and the duration or end date of security updates.

As an example of why model-specific checking matters, Lenovo’s product datasheet for its Lenovo Tab says it launched with Android 14, expects Android 15 and Android 16 upgrades, and expects four years of security updates. Those are manufacturer expectations for the model covered by that datasheet, not a standard for inexpensive Android tablets. Confirm the current SKU and local support details before relying on them.
For a tablet you already own, Google says Android version, security-update status, and Google Play system-update status can be found in device settings. For a purchase, the manufacturer’s policy is the more useful source for planned future support.

Compare processor, RAM, and storage with your workload
Check the exact configuration rather than relying on a product-family name. The processor affects how quickly apps open and how demanding games run; RAM affects how well apps stay available when you switch between them. A tablet intended mainly for reading and video may not need the same performance as one used for heavier games or frequent multitasking.
Storage matters for installed apps, downloaded video, school files, and games. iTechGuides’ 2025 guide recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, and says 128 GB is preferable when the price difference is modest. That is the guide’s buying advice, not a formal Android requirement or guarantee of good performance.

For comparison, Lenovo’s cited Tab datasheet lists 4 GB RAM and either 64 GB or 128 GB of built-in storage. It also lists a microSD slot. Check the capacity limit specified by the manufacturer for the exact model. A memory card can help with compatible files, but it may not substitute for internal storage for apps, and not every app or game can be moved to a card.
Check the screen, sound, and connections you will use
Compare screen size and resolution against how you will use the tablet: a larger display can be more comfortable for video or schoolwork, while a smaller one may be easier to carry. Check brightness or other viewing details if the manufacturer provides them, especially if you expect to use it in bright rooms or outdoors. There is no single best screen size or resolution for every buyer.

- Sound: Check the number and placement of speakers if you often watch video without headphones.
- Headphones: Confirm whether the tablet has a 3.5 mm audio jack or whether you will need USB-C or Bluetooth headphones.
- Internet: Distinguish Wi-Fi-only from cellular models. For cellular, check supported bands in your country and whether the configuration needs a SIM or eSIM.
- Ports: Verify the USB port and any other connections required for your accessories.
Verify stylus and accessory compatibility
If you plan to take notes or draw, look for explicit stylus compatibility and any published details that matter to you, such as supported features. Check whether a compatible pen is included in the specific listing: the cited buyer guide notes Lenovo Tab M11 bundles differ and a stylus may be included in some, not all.
Check whether a case, keyboard, or other accessory fits the exact tablet model. Do not assume it comes in the box just because a product page shows it. Lenovo’s datasheet warns that in-box items can vary by market, reseller, and configuration, and that accessories may vary in availability.
Review the seller, warranty, and full purchase cost
Before paying, confirm what the actual listing includes, who provides the warranty, and what the seller’s return terms are in your location. Also check that the SKU is intended for your market; regional differences can affect included items, connectivity, and support. Terms vary by retailer and region, so rely on the seller’s and manufacturer’s current policies rather than assuming a universal return window or warranty period.
When comparing two otherwise suitable tablets, include required extras in the total: a microSD card if supported, a model-compatible case, a keyboard, or a stylus. Check compatibility and whether the item is bundled before comparing prices.

Use a weighted comparison when several tablets fit
Compare models against your own priorities instead of treating every specification as equally important. A simple checklist can expose a deal-breaker before you buy:
