A budget phone with a rear display is worth considering if that screen makes a useful task easier—most notably framing selfies or video with the rear camera. Before buying, confirm what the screen actually does on the exact regional model, then weigh software support, camera results, battery and charging, the main display, storage, network compatibility, and the full purchase terms. A secondary screen is a feature, not proof that the rest of the phone is a good buy.
Check what the rear display actually does
The clearest practical use for a small rear screen is as a live viewfinder: it can let you frame yourself while taking a selfie or recording with the phone’s rear camera. Tom’s Guide describes this use on the NUU B40 5G, while Trend Hunter reports it for the Honor Play20A. Those reports do not establish that every rear display supports the same camera functions.
Before you buy, check the exact model’s feature list or hands-on coverage for:

- Whether the screen shows a live camera preview, rather than only static information.
- Whether preview works for both photos and video, and whether you can start or control capture from the rear screen.
- Whether the preview is large and clear enough for your framing needs.
- Which other functions are supported. Reported examples across phones include time, incoming-call details, notifications, media controls and timers, but availability depends on the device and its software.
Do not assume that a feature shown in one model or region carries over to another variant. For a higher-end point of comparison, Omdia’s September 2025 report lists secondary AMOLED panels on the China-launched Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max, measuring 2.7 inches and 2.9 inches, respectively, with both listed at 120Hz. Those models are not budget recommendations, and their feature set does not establish what a lower-priced phone can do. Omdia analyst Sanyam Chaurasia described the feature’s broader value as dependent on Xiaomi’s software ecosystem beyond camera use (Omdia, September 2025).

Judge the camera by its output, not its preview screen
A rear display can improve the way you use a rear camera for self-recording, but it does not make that camera take better pictures. Look for sample images and video or reviews that assess the conditions you care about, such as indoor light, daylight, moving subjects, or the kind of clips you plan to record. Pay attention to stabilization, focus and sound as well as still-image detail.
Do not rely on megapixel counts alone. A phone’s camera specifications describe components; they do not establish how consistently the camera produces useful photos or video. Tom’s Guide’s NUU B40 5G review discusses the rear display’s selfie and vlogging use, but that workflow benefit should be considered separately from camera quality (Tom’s Guide, May 26, 2026).

Verify the model’s software and security support
For a phone you expect to keep, find the manufacturer’s update commitment for the precise model and region, including how long security updates are promised and when that period starts. Android update policies vary by manufacturer, as Consumer Reports notes in its cell phone buying guide, updated September 2, 2026. A review’s uncertainty about future updates is a reason to verify the policy, not evidence of a confirmed manufacturer commitment or lack of one.
Tom’s Guide’s NUU B40 5G hands-on review raises concern about long-term software support, but does not establish a definitive update schedule. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the written policy rather than treating the phone’s launch version or a reviewer’s concern as a promise.

Compare the battery, charging and main display
Battery capacity is not the same as battery life. Compare independent runtime tests where available, and check the charging rate and whether a charger is included in the box. Tom’s Guide’s cheap-phone guide compares battery and charging specifications alongside test outcomes; actual results matter more than capacity in isolation (Tom’s Guide, Best cheap phones 2026 tested).
For the main screen, check the resolution, daylight readability and refresh rate—not just its size or panel type. These everyday details may matter more than a small rear screen if you spend most of your time reading, browsing or watching video on the front.

Check storage, performance and network compatibility
- Storage: Match available storage to the photos and video you expect to keep. Expandable storage, when offered, may help, but confirm the exact model’s support and limits.
- Performance: Look for reviews that cover the apps and games you actually use. Budget models make different trade-offs between price, processing power and memory.
- Network: Confirm that the exact regional variant supports your carrier’s required bands and that the phone is unlocked if you need to change carriers. Do not assume a model name guarantees compatibility everywhere.
Compare the full price and purchase terms
Check the current price for the precise variant from the seller you plan to use, and review warranty, return terms and stock status. Prices and availability can change, and the cited coverage does not verify that the named examples are currently sold in every market.

Its review describes a 1.6-inch rear AMOLED display and reports a week of use. The same article lists a 6.7-inch AMOLED main screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, Dimensity 7025 chipset, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, 64MP main and 2MP macro rear cameras, a 16MP front camera and a 5,000mAh battery. These reported specifications and the historical price should be checked against the current regional product listing before purchase (Tom’s Guide).

Trend Hunter reports that the entry-level Honor Play20A has a rear screen for time, incoming-call details, media and rear-camera framing. It also reports a 6.9-inch 90Hz HD+ LCD, Helio G81, 4GB RAM, up to 128GB expandable storage, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 6,000mAh battery and 15W USB-C charging. The report has no publication date supplied and is secondary reporting; verify these details with Honor for the specific market and variant before relying on them (Trend Hunter).
Make the decision around your use
A rear-display phone is a better fit when you will regularly use the rear camera for self-recording and the exact phone offers a clear, useful preview with suitable controls. If that is not a frequent need, compare the phone as you would any budget handset: prioritize dependable update support, camera results, battery life, readable main screen, adequate storage and carrier compatibility. The available examples have not been tested in a controlled, like-for-like comparison, so their specifications alone cannot establish which is the better purchase.
