Bring a reusable water bottle if the festival allows it, a compact rain jacket or poncho, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and—if permitted—a blanket or low-rise chair. A reusable tote can help with shopping. Before you leave, check the event’s current allowed-item and bag policies: bottle, food, seating, umbrella, and container rules vary by festival.

What should I bring to an outdoor fall festival?

Use this checklist as a starting point, then confirm that each item is allowed at your specific event.

  • Water bottle: Check whether the festival permits reusable bottles, what materials are allowed, and whether the bottle must be empty or factory-sealed at entry. Also check whether refill stations are available.
  • Rain protection: A compact rain jacket or poncho is useful when showers are possible. Do not assume an umbrella is an acceptable substitute; some festivals prohibit umbrellas.
  • Sun protection: Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or visor. Check any container-size or aerosol restrictions before bringing sunscreen.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Choose footwear suited to the distance and surface. Some events involve walking between locations, grass, or uneven ground.
  • Optional seating: A blanket or low-rise chair can make a grassy event more comfortable, but check chair-style, size, and placement rules.
  • Reusable shopping tote: Bring one if you plan to browse vendors and the event permits bags. FoCo Fall Fest asks attendees to bring a reusable bag because plastic bags will not be provided.
  • Personal essentials: Depending on the event and length of your visit, consider payment methods and a small flashlight. CT Folk includes these among its recommendations.

What can I bring through the entrance?

There is no universal outdoor-festival packing policy. Check the event’s current FAQ and bag policy before you pack, especially for bottles, outside food and drink, bags, umbrellas, chairs, blankets, and sunscreen containers.

For example, Maha Festival’s 2026 FAQ permits factory-sealed water and empty bottles, but prohibits umbrellas and most outside food or beverages. Its blanket and low-rise chair rules also exclude the Chair & Blanket Free Zone, and director-style chairs are prohibited. The FIFA Fan Festival policy, last updated June 14, 2026, allows empty reusable bottles and plastic or aluminum bottles, as well as rain jackets and ponchos; it limits sunscreen to non-aerosol containers no larger than 3.4 ounces. CT Folk’s 2026 FAQ lists outside food and beverages, coolers, and glass containers as prohibited. These are examples of individual event rules, not standards that apply to every festival.

How to tailor your packing list to the event

  • Match the forecast: Pack rain protection if showers are possible, and sun protection if you expect prolonged outdoor exposure. Choose gear that is allowed and easy to carry.
  • Consider terrain and distance: Walking shoes matter more when the event spans multiple locations or includes grass and uneven ground. MODE Photography Festival’s FAQ recommends comfortable shoes for its multi-location format.
  • Plan for your visit length: A longer day may make water, a flashlight, and payment options more useful. CT Folk recommends one or two 32-ounce water bottles, but check that event’s bottle rules rather than assuming the same amount or container is appropriate elsewhere.
  • Decide whether seating or shopping capacity matters: Check chair and blanket placement rules before bringing seating. A tote is handy for vendor purchases, but confirm bag restrictions first.

Examples of official festival guidance

Festival Published guidance What to check
FoCo Fall Fest Recommends a reusable bag, water bottle, sunscreen, and rain preparation; says blankets and lawn chairs may be brought for the grass. Its entry restrictions and the conditions of the grass seating area.
Maha Festival 2026 Lists factory-sealed water and empty bottles among allowed items; permits blankets and low-rise lawn chairs only outside the Chair & Blanket Free Zone. Umbrella and outside food or drink prohibitions, plus chair and seating-area limits.
FIFA Fan Festival policy, updated June 14, 2026 Allows rain jackets and ponchos, empty reusable bottles, and plastic or aluminum bottles; specifies non-aerosol sunscreen up to 3.4 ounces. Exact bottle requirements and sunscreen container limits.
CT Folk 2026 Recommends chairs, blankets, sunscreen, payment methods, one or two 32-ounce bottles, a flashlight, and rain gear. Its prohibitions on outside food and beverages, coolers, and glass containers.
MODE Photography Festival Recommends layers, a hat, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and comfortable shoes for a multi-location event. Walking or wheeling between locations and the conditions on your route.

Check the policy before you leave

  1. Open the festival’s official FAQ or allowed-items page and look for the current event year.
  2. Read the bag policy as well as the item list; a permitted item may still be subject to bag-size or entry requirements.
  3. Verify bottle material and whether it must be empty or sealed, and check for refill information if you plan to bring a reusable bottle.
  4. Check restrictions for umbrellas, food, chairs, blankets, and sunscreen containers before adding them to your bag.
  5. Pack only items that fit both the event rules and your plans for weather, walking distance, terrain, and time on site.
