Bring familiar, comfortable walking shoes, clothing suited to the forecast, and sun or rain protection as needed. Carry water, food, identification, or other supplies only when the event’s current instructions call for them. Before you leave, check the organizer’s event page or final pack: routes, water and snack stops, check-in requirements, and restricted items vary by walk.
What to wear
- Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes: Breast Cancer Now recommends good walking shoes for a sponsored walk. Choose a pair you have already worn on walks rather than trying new shoes on event day; the organizer’s guidance does not endorse a particular brand or model. Breast Cancer Now’s walking advice
- Weather-appropriate clothing: Wear comfortable clothes for the expected temperature and route. Add layers if conditions may change. For likely sun, bring a hat and sunscreen; pack a rain layer if rain is possible. - Pink or event apparel, if you want it: Pink clothing is optional. Breast Cancer Now suggests adding a touch of pink, while the American Cancer Society promotes official Making Strides merchandise. What to carry
Keep your carry-on light and follow the selected walk’s rules. Organizers differ in what they provide and what participants need to bring.
- Water bottle: Bring a refillable bottle if the organizer asks for one or provides refill points. The Pink Ribbon Walk FAQ says refill points are available and advises participants to carry water; it also states, “To help reduce plastic waste, there won’t be bottled water provided at the event.” That is a policy for that event, not a rule for every walk. - Food: Pack a snack or lunch if the event recommends it, the route is long, or you prefer to have your own. The Pink Ribbon Walk FAQ recommends carrying lunch while also describing snack stations, so check what your walk actually supplies.
- Registration details and identification: Take your confirmation, walking number, or identification if the organizer requests them. At the Pink Ribbon Walk, the walking number should be displayed visibly. The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation lists government identification and a health card; these are event-specific examples, not universal requirements.
- Payment method: Cash or a card may be useful at a particular event, and appears on one organizer’s packing list. Bring one only if it suits that event’s arrangements.
- Personal bag: Carry a small bag only if you need it and the event permits it. Check any bag restrictions before arriving.

- Whether water, food, toilets, and rest stops are available, and where they are located.
- Check-in arrangements, parking, identification requirements, and where or how to display your walking number.
- The forecast and any rain-or-shine guidance; pack sun or rain protection accordingly.
- Rules for bags, outside food, pets, umbrellas, and other restricted items.
- Whether friends and family can access the route or designated cheering points.
