Before starting a GLP-1 weight-loss drug, ask your doctor which exact medicine and formulation fits your situation, what risks or interactions your history raises, and how dosing, follow-up, and pregnancy planning will be handled. These drugs are not interchangeable: their FDA-approved uses, warnings, and instructions differ. This checklist is based on U.S. FDA information; use the current label for the specific prescription being considered.

Which medicine and FDA-approved use are we discussing?

“GLP-1 weight-loss drug” is an umbrella phrase, not a single medicine. For example, Wegovy is semaglutide and has FDA-approved injection and tablet formulations. Tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound, acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Products and formulations can have different approved indications for different patient groups.

Ask your doctor:

  • Which exact medicine and formulation are you recommending, and for which FDA-approved indication?
  • How does that indication fit my health history and treatment goal?
  • What benefit is reasonable to expect for my situation, and what factors could affect it?
  • If we are considering more than one option, how do their indications, warnings, dosing instructions, and follow-up differ?

One product’s approval does not mean every medicine in the class is approved for the same use. FDA announced in March 2024 that Wegovy was approved to help prevent certain cardiovascular events in adults with cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight; that is a product- and patient-specific indication, not a class-wide approval. FDA announcement.

What parts of my medical and family history matter?

Tell the prescriber about relevant conditions, prior reactions, and family history before deciding. Ask which concerns apply to the exact product and whether they change the treatment choice or monitoring plan.

Wegovy prescribing information, revised February 2026.

Could it interact with my prescriptions or supplements?

Bring a complete list of medicines and supplements, including doses and how often you take them. Mention diabetes medicines in particular: insulin and medicines that increase insulin release can raise concerns about low blood sugar when used with certain drugs in this area. Delayed gastric emptying may also affect absorption of some oral medicines.

What side effects should I expect, and which symptoms need attention?

  • How will the dose start and change over time?
  • What should I do if I miss a dose, have trouble administering it, or cannot tolerate the current dose?

  • When will we follow up, and what checks or tests will help us decide whether treatment is helping or needs to change?

What if I am pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, or having surgery?

Discuss pregnancy plans before treatment and ask for instructions specific to the proposed medicine. Do not apply one product’s timing to another. The current Wegovy label directs patients using it for weight reduction or cardiovascular risk reduction to stop at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Confirm the current label and your clinician’s advice for your circumstances. Wegovy prescribing information.

Ask separately how breastfeeding or an upcoming operation or procedure involving anesthesia affects the plan. The answer should come from your prescriber and care team for the particular medicine, timing, and procedure.

How should I check the prescription and practical details?

Before leaving the appointment, confirm the product name, formulation, indication, dose instructions, and who to contact with questions. If you are comparing options, have the clinician help you weigh the relevant differences rather than assuming medicines are interchangeable.
