NCERT’s Class 9 Social Science textbook reportedly introduces personal income tax through the new tax regime’s slab-based calculation. The chapter does not discuss the old regime, according to a 1 October 2026 PTI report carried by Careers360. That is the reported scope of a school lesson—not a change to tax law: eligible taxpayers can still choose the old regime under applicable rules.
Where income tax appears in the Class 9 curriculum
The reported material appears in Understanding Society India and Beyond—Part 2, in a chapter titled “Managing Your Personal Finances.” Careers360’s 1 October 2026 report, which carries PTI reporting, describes the book as released after the 2026–27 academic year had begun. The CBSE Academic Unit lists a Class IX curriculum for 2026–27 that includes Social Science, while the Ministry of Education said on 10 August 2026 that NCERT had brought out new syllabi and books for Grades 1–9 as part of the NEP/NCF process. Those official pages provide curriculum context; they do not independently confirm the chapter’s precise content. CBSE’s 2026–27 curriculum page · Ministry of Education release
The report characterizes the addition as a first for this age group. That characterization should be attributed to the report: the available sources do not independently establish that no earlier Class 9 textbook covered personal income tax.

According to PTI, the chapter presents a table of new-regime tax slabs and steps for calculating tax liability using those slabs. The report reproduces the textbook’s description: “India follows a slab system for calculating income tax as shown in table.” The full slab chart was not available for independent verification, so exact thresholds, rebates, deductions, calculations, and the tax year attached to the table should not be inferred from this report. Income tax is one part of a broader personal-finance lesson, not the chapter’s sole subject. PTI says it covers income, budgeting, saving, investing, and protection or risk management. The reported investment examples include fixed deposits, bonds, stocks or equity shares, and mutual funds; these are examples in the textbook, not recommendations.
The report also attributes a civic message to the textbook, describing payment of taxes “honestly and on time” as an “important responsibility of every citizen.” It reproduces a wider passage connecting decisions about spending, saving, investing, risk protection, responsible borrowing, and paying taxes with a person’s financial future. These passages are quoted as reported by PTI, rather than verified against the complete book text.

Does the book explain the old tax regime?
Not according to the report: it says the chapter discusses the new-regime slabs and does not mention the old regime. That omission describes what the reported lesson covers. It does not mean the old regime has been abolished, nor does a school textbook determine which regimes taxpayers may use.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the distinction matters
The reported lesson gives students an introduction to tax calculation using one framework, while eligible taxpayers’ choices remain governed by tax rules beyond the lesson. The chapter can therefore help explain the idea of slabs without serving as a complete guide to filing or choosing a regime. Because the report does not provide a verifiable full chart or its applicable tax year, readers should not use it to calculate a real tax bill.
