For HBO Max subscribers, DC Studios’ changes are primarily about the shows and films the service may offer—not a documented change to subscription accounts. Warner Bros. Discovery set out to coordinate DC stories across film, television, and animation, and later announced specific DC Studios releases for HBO Max. Whether that makes the service more valuable to you depends on which titles arrive in your country and when.
What changed at DC Studios
In January 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery named James Gunn and Peter Safran co-chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios and described a long-term, interconnected story across film, television, and animation. The initial Chapter 1 slate included five films and five television series in development. Those figures describe the announcement at the time; they do not establish how many projects remain active or on their original schedules. WBD’s slate announcement set out a coordinated creative direction, not a guarantee that every project would reach the screen as first planned.
In May 2025, WBD announced that the streaming service would return from the “Max” name to “HBO Max.” The rebrand identifies the platform; it does not mean every DC title is available in every country or included with every subscription tier. WBD’s announcement positioned DC among the brands featured on the service.
What subscribers can expect to watch
Superman
WBD announced that Superman would make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on September 19, 2025. It separately announced a U.S. HBO linear debut for September 20, so the streaming date and the television-channel date are not interchangeable. See WBD’s release announcement for those dates.

Lanterns
WBD’s May 24, 2026 HBO Max programming announcement listed the DC Studios series Lanterns for an August 16 debut, with eight episodes released weekly. That is the announced schedule for this series, not evidence that all future DC Studios shows will follow the same rollout. The programming announcement is the source for the date and episode cadence.
These examples show DC Studios titles appearing in HBO Max’s announced programming mix. They do not establish that the entire DC library is on the service, that every title is exclusive to it, or that a title is available in every market. Check the service’s local catalog for the specific film or series you want.

Does this change your subscription, bill, or devices?
The cited studio, branding, and programming announcements do not announce a universal change to HBO Max accounts, billing, prices, or supported devices as a result of DC Studios’ creative strategy. A content slate is not itself a subscription-terms change. For account-specific costs or supported devices, rely on the terms and help information shown for your own account and country.
Availability and plans depend on your country
HBO Max offerings vary by market. For example, WBD announced a UK and Ireland launch for March 26, 2026, with programming from HBO, Warner Bros., DC Studios, and Max Originals. The announcement’s plan details and prices apply to that UK and Ireland launch; they should not be used to infer U.S. prices or a universal package. See WBD’s UK and Ireland launch announcement for the market-specific information.

Before deciding whether DC programming changes the value of your subscription, check the titles currently offered in your region, their availability dates, and which plan includes them. A studio-wide strategy cannot tell you what is in your local catalog.

In June 2025, WBD announced a planned separation into two publicly traded companies and described Streaming & Studios as including DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max. That was a corporate plan, not an announcement of a consumer-facing service change. The announcement alone does not establish the current status of the separation or any effect on subscribers; see WBD’s original announcement for what was proposed at the time.
