No—don’t use just any tape for a mechanical keyboard tape mod. Start with low-tack painter’s tape or light masking tape, applied sparingly to the back of the PCB. Keep openings, connectors and components uncovered, and inspect wireless boards especially carefully. Stronger or thicker tapes can leave residue, interfere with fit or make removal riskier; no tape guarantees a particular sound.
Which tape is the best starting point?
Keyboard-specific guides recommend low-tack painter’s tape or light masking tape. Tom’s Hardware advises using painter’s tape or another very light masking tape to reduce the chance of pulling components off the PCB during removal: Mechanical Keyboard Tuning Guide: How to Make Your Mechanical Keyboard Feel and Sound Its Best. That is a practical starting point, not proof that every product sold as painter’s tape is residue-free or suitable for every board.
Check the tape’s own directions and consider its tack, backing thickness and flexibility, and how it behaves when removed. The available guidance does not establish a universal thickness, residue rating or best brand for this mod.

Where does the tape go, and what must stay clear?
The tape mod places tape on the underside—the back—of the PCB. The tape should not cover screw holes, ports, connectors, exposed components or service contacts. Tom’s Hardware specifically calls for cutouts around screws and components such as JST plugs; another guide also cautions against covering connectors. Tom’s Hardware; Pierce and Oak.

Do not assume a wireless keyboard has the same layout as a wired one. Before applying tape, identify the battery, antenna, charging circuitry, reset contacts and any exposed components. Keep those areas clear. Mechalick’s modding guide.
How to apply tape cautiously
- Power down and open the keyboard only if you can access its PCB safely. Disconnect power and, if the board has a battery, disconnect it before handling the PCB.
- Inspect the specific board. Locate screw holes, ports, connectors, components and service contacts. On wireless boards, also identify the battery, antenna and charging circuitry.
- Cut tape to fit the PCB’s clear areas. Leave every opening and component uncovered; do not stretch the tape across a connector or force it into a tight case gap.
- Begin with one layer. The available guides do not establish a universally correct layer count. One guide describes two to four layers as a practice, not a measured standard; the right amount depends on the board. Pierce and Oak.
- Reassemble without pressure. Check that the case closes normally and that tape is not pinched or pushing against components. If it does not fit, remove tape rather than forcing the case shut.
What sound change should you expect?
A tape mod is intended to change a keyboard’s resonance or acoustic profile, but the effect depends on the board’s construction and existing dampening. The available keyboard guides do not provide controlled acoustic tests establishing a predictable improvement or a guaranteed sound signature across keyboards. Treat terms such as “thockier” as subjective descriptions, not promised results.

Can the tape be removed safely?
Low-tack tape is recommended partly because stronger adhesive may pull components during removal, but that does not make removal risk-free or guarantee a clean result. Work slowly and avoid pulling tape across small components. If the tape resists, stop rather than yanking it; the cited guidance does not establish a universal removal method for every PCB or tape formulation.
