In the United States, a donation to a federal candidate or political committee can become part of a public record. Depending on the committee and reporting rules, that record may show your name, mailing address, occupation, employer, contribution amount and recipient. A federal donation below $200 is not automatically private, and state rules differ.

What information is public in a federal donation record?

Federal campaign-finance reports can connect a donor to a recipient committee and a contribution amount. When itemization is required, committees must make best efforts to obtain and report the donor’s full name, mailing address, occupation and employer. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) says reports are made available on its website within 48 hours of receipt; that is a stated availability window, not an average measured delay. A mailing address does not have to be a home address. The FEC says a donor may provide an address where they can receive mail, including a work address or post-office box. FEC guidance on individual contributions

Seeing a donation linked to a recipient may suggest political support for that recipient. It does not, by itself, establish the donor’s complete ideology, voting behavior or private beliefs. Someone may also combine public records with information available elsewhere online, but there is no established statistic for how often that happens or what it reveals about a particular donor.

Does a donation under $200 stay private?

No. For federal candidate committees, itemization generally applies when an individual’s contributions exceed $200 in aggregate during the election cycle. For PACs and party committees, the relevant aggregation period is generally the calendar year. The $200 figure is a reporting threshold, not a promise that every smaller transaction remains off public reports. Committees may itemize contributions below the required threshold. Intermediaries matter, too. A conduit—including a third-party platform that is itself a registered political committee—must disclose all earmarked contributions regardless of amount, alongside any disclosure required of the ultimate recipient. FEC guidance on individual contributions

Federal committees must make best efforts to request identifying information, but FEC guidance does not require a donor to provide it. The FEC says a committee may accept no more than $50 from an anonymous source. That limit should not be treated as a way to make a larger federal donation privately. Do state and local donation rules use the same threshold?

No. The federal threshold does not apply nationwide to every state or local donation. The National Conference of State Legislatures’ May 2026 summary says most states’ thresholds for additional contributor information fall between $50 and $200, with $100 the most common. Requirements also vary by office, reporting entity and other circumstances. Check the current rules of the relevant state disclosure agency for a state or local contribution. Some tax-exempt political organizations described in section 527 have a separate IRS filing obligation. For those organizations, the IRS says contributor name and address, and an individual contributor’s occupation and employer, must be reported on Schedule A to Form 8872 when contributions aggregate to $200 or more in a calendar year. This is a separate filing context from FEC rules for candidate committees. IRS reporting requirements for political organizations

Does public access mean the information can be used for anything?

No. The FEC says individual contributor information obtained from its reports cannot be sold or used to solicit contributions, including charitable contributions, or for commercial purposes. Its guidance describes an exception for newspapers, magazines, books and similar communications when their principal purpose is not solicitation or commercial activity. That restriction does not mean the information can never be republished. FEC: Sale or use of contributor information

How can you correct a donation record?

Contact the committee that filed the report and ask it to review the entry. If appropriate, the committee may file an amendment; the FEC updates its database after receiving the amended report. The original filing remains public, so a correction is not a guarantee that the earlier version disappears from the public record or from copies and third-party sites.
