On December 9, 1999, STMicroelectronics and Ericsson Mobile Communications announced a planned partnership to develop integrated circuits (ICs) for Bluetooth wireless links using Ericsson’s core architecture. The first planned device was to use ST’s 0.18-micron RFCMOS8 process. The announcement described a development plan—not confirmation that a chip was later released—and available reporting does not identify a resulting product.
What the companies announced
According to EE Times’ December 9, 1999 report, the companies intended to develop a range of ICs for Bluetooth wireless links. Their stated approach was to optimize Bluetooth solutions under a common architecture based on Ericsson’s core.
The report framed the effort as a way to support wider adoption of the Bluetooth radio-frequency standard. It does not provide a detailed block diagram or identify a version of Ericsson’s core architecture, so the announcement should not be read as a specification of the chip design.
What ST was expected to build
The first planned device was to use a 0.18-micron CMOS process. EE Times identified ST’s RFCMOS8 technology, which it described as combining 0.18-micron high-performance digital process technology with RF capabilities for gigahertz-range transceivers. The intended IC would combine radio-frequency functions with logic and digital processing to establish and control links between Bluetooth-enabled devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That process-node figure is a technical detail reported in 1999, not evidence that a device reached production. The announcement did not name the chip or give a launch date, shipment figures, or customers.
What “core architecture” means in Bluetooth
In general Bluetooth terminology, a core architecture describes the system’s main functional components and how they work together. The Bluetooth SIG’s Core Specification 6.2 describes a system with a Host and one or more Controllers. A Controller can support BR/EDR, Bluetooth Low Energy (LE), or a combined configuration. The Host Controller Interface (HCI) defines a common interface between Host and Controller, helping independent implementations interoperate.

This explains the general idea of a shared Bluetooth architecture, but the current specification does not establish which specific components or interfaces Ericsson’s 1999 core used. EE Times did not detail those implementation choices.
Benefits described at the time
ST executive Joel Monnier, then corporate vice president and director of central R&D, presented interoperability as an intended advantage: “Common use of the proven Ericsson Bluetooth core will help facilitate product interoperability,” EE Times quoted him as saying.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Monnier also described combining Ericsson intellectual property with ST’s design and technology capabilities as a way to pursue solutions requiring less board space and pre-validated RF implementation. These were projected benefits attributed to the company, not independently measured results in the report.
What is known about the outcome
The contemporaneous report establishes that the companies announced plans to work together. It does not establish which chip, if any, resulted from the agreement. No named model, commercial release, production volume, or later business outcome is identified in the available reporting. That distinction matters: an announced development partnership is not proof of a completed product.
