Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Cooling equipment such as fans, air handlers, chillers, cooling towers and pumps is usually the main source. Generator noise is different: it occurs during a power interruption or a maintenance test. What someone hears depends on where they are, the equipment and operating conditions, and how the site is designed and screened.
Why data centers make noise
Servers release heat as they run. Cooling systems have to move that heat away from the server spaces, so fans and air-handling units circulate air while chillers, cooling towers and pumps help transfer or reject heat. Their moving parts produce the persistent mechanical sound associated with a facility.
Electrical and power equipment can add lower-frequency sound. The result varies with equipment type, fan speed, cooling demand, physical layout and acoustic treatment. Cooling does not automatically stop at night: equipment continues to manage heat whenever needed.
What a data center sounds like
Common descriptions include a steady hum, low drone, whir or tonal whine. Both low- and high-frequency tones can occur. The sound beside exterior cooling equipment may differ from what is heard inside a server hall, and either can change as the cooling system operates differently. It is not accurate to assume every data center sounds the same or invariably roars.

Cooling noise is usually continuous
Fans, air handlers and other cooling equipment operate as needed to remove heat. Their sound may be a blend of airflow and mechanical noise, or have a more noticeable tonal quality.
Generator noise is episodic
Backup generators are used during power disruptions and may also run for maintenance checks. Microsoft says its own generator testing and maintenance runs total much less than 24 hours a year and are typically scheduled during daytime. That is an operator-specific account, not a standard schedule for all data centers. Microsoft also says its generators have sound-attenuating housings and may be shielded.

What decibel figures do—and do not—tell you
A sound level only makes sense with its measurement location and conditions attached. A figure measured beside equipment cannot be treated as the level at a property boundary or inside a nearby home.
| Reported figure | What it describes | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| Approaching 100 dBA | Equipment-source levels for cooling systems, server halls and backup generators; not a typical nearby-home reading. | Berkley Group, Wichita Metropolitan Area Planning Department white paper, March 19, 2026. |
| Above 85 dBA | Air-handling units and backup generators within a facility; not a property-line level. | University of New South Wales explainer, 2026. |
| 55–85 dBA or higher | A broad reported range for external noise levels, not a universal measurement or prediction for a particular site. | Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute fact sheet, accessed 2026; a secondary summary. |
These figures refer to different contexts and should not be compared as if they were readings from the same place, equipment or measurement method. The Indiana University fact sheet also reports that internal levels can reach 96 dBA, attributing that figure to Tao and Gao (2025); it is a secondary summary, not a site-specific reading.

How to compare noise from two sites
There is no single sound level that represents every data center. A useful comparison accounts for the measurement location, sound character, operating state and conditions:
- Location: distinguish a reading at the equipment source from one inside the facility, at the property line or inside a nearby residence.
- Character: note whether the sound is broad airflow or fan noise, or a more distinct low-frequency hum or tonal whine.
- Operating state: identify whether the site is in ordinary cooling operation, using a different cooling mode, testing a generator or responding to an emergency.
- Conditions: record time of day, distance, background noise, weather and intervening barriers.
- Applicable standard: check the local jurisdiction and land-use rules, along with measurement weighting and any tonal- or low-frequency adjustments.
A consumer sound meter can help document informal observations at a particular location, but it does not establish regulatory compliance. For a consequential complaint or compliance question, a competent independent acoustic assessment is more appropriate.

How facilities reduce noise
Noise control can begin with equipment selection and site design, then add measures that interrupt or contain sound. The University of New South Wales lists quieter cooling equipment, careful building design, soundproofing, acoustic louvres, physical barriers and silencers. Wichita planning guidance also discusses setbacks, standards that address high- and low-frequency sound, independent acoustic studies before and after construction, generator maintenance-noise studies, and acoustic treatment for cooling systems.
The controls that are required—and the permitted levels—depend on local rules and land use. The University of New South Wales describes a typical Australian residential nighttime range of 35–40 dBA and independent assessments as part of environmental approval; that range is Australian context, not a worldwide limit.

What is known about health effects
Data-center-specific health evidence is not established in the sources cited here. The University of New South Wales says, “When it comes to data centres, we simply don’t yet have the research data that identifies any health effects.” That is a statement about the limits of data-center-specific research, not proof that every facility is harmless or that a particular symptom is caused by one.
The Wichita planning report says potential impacts from infrasound have not been thoroughly studied or evaluated. Microsoft, speaking for its own operations rather than as an independent scientific authority, says low-frequency sound from its facilities is generally very low and typically imperceptible under normal conditions. These qualifications do not establish what a person will hear at a particular property.
