“SOS Only” means your iPhone is not connected to your own carrier’s cellular network. In some locations, it may still be able to route an emergency call through another carrier, but that depends on local networks and is not guaranteed. SOS Only does not mean ordinary calls, texts, or mobile data have been restored.
Try Airplane Mode and a restart first, then check your iPhone’s software, carrier settings, SIM or eSIM line, and account with your carrier.

What “SOS Only” means
Apple says the SOS or SOS only status appears when an iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. If another carrier’s network is available, the phone may be able to route an emergency call through it. Availability depends on location and network conditions; do not assume an emergency call will connect. Apple’s guidance on SOS, No Service, and Searching and its iPhone User Guide describe this limitation.

It also differs from “No Service” or “Searching,” which are other status messages Apple covers for cellular connection problems. The status alone does not identify whether the cause is coverage, an account issue, a SIM or eSIM setup problem, or the phone itself.

How to restore your carrier connection
Work through these checks in order. The first steps are reversible; account, coverage, and device eligibility checks require your carrier.
- Reconnect to the network: Open Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Give the iPhone a moment to reconnect if a usable cellular network is available.
- Restart the iPhone: Restarting can prompt it to try connecting again.
- Check for software and carrier settings updates: Install the latest iOS update. When connected to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > About and install a carrier settings update if prompted. A new SIM can require settings for the new carrier.
- Check that your line and SIM are available: If you use Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular, select the affected line, and make sure it is turned on. If the line is missing, contact your carrier about setting up an eSIM or inserting a physical SIM. If a physical SIM is damaged or does not fit, ask the carrier about a replacement.
- If you are traveling internationally, check roaming and plan support: Confirm the correct cellular line is enabled, check that data roaming is enabled if your carrier requires it, and ask the carrier whether your plan supports service where you are.
- Ask your carrier to investigate: Have it check your account standing, local coverage or outages, plan setup, and whether the device is blocked or barred. For an imported device, ask whether local IMEI registration is required. The carrier is the one that can inspect these account- and network-specific details.
- Contact Apple if the carrier rules out its side: Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics on iPhone models running iOS 18 or later. If the carrier finds no account or network problem and suspects a hardware fault, contact Apple about service.
Why not reset network settings first?
Reset Network Settings is not a good early step: Apple warns that it erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, and VPN and APN settings. Follow Apple’s relevant troubleshooting guidance before considering it, and be prepared to restore settings you need. Apple’s call troubleshooting guidance explains what this reset removes.

When SOS Only appears, prioritize a safe way to communicate
If you need emergency help, try calling emergency services if it is safe to do so, but do not rely on SOS Only as a guarantee that a call can be placed. Its emergency-call possibility depends on other carrier networks being available. Satellite emergency features are separate from the SOS Only cellular status and depend on the iPhone model and region; the status itself does not confirm that satellite service is available.
