Aerospace manufacturing jobs in the Seattle area do not share one qualification checklist. Assembly, machining, fabrication, inspection, production and maintenance roles call for different skills; some employers accept experience from other hands-on trades, while specific jobs may require a certificate or apprenticeship. Boeing’s Puget Sound job materials offer useful local examples, not universal requirements for every aerospace employer.
Which aerospace manufacturing jobs are available around Seattle?
Boeing’s Seattle-area overview identifies work across fabrication, production, quality and maintenance, with examples in Everett, Renton and Auburn. The skills you need depend on the task family and the live job posting: an assembler’s drawing-reading and installation work differs from a machinist’s equipment operation or an inspector’s quality checks. See Boeing’s Seattle-area jobs overview.
| Route | Typical work or skill emphasis | What the cited examples say about qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Assembly and installation | Interpret drawings and work instructions; install components and complete mechanical assemblies using tools and measuring equipment. | Boeing’s assembler-installer guidance asks for at least one year of experience in manufacturing, construction, automotive, maritime, aerospace or a related industry. This is Boeing guidance for that role, not a regional industry-wide rule. |
| Machining | Operate or work with equipment such as lathes, grinders, EDM, CNC and milling machines, depending on the job. | One Seattle precision machinist/assembler listing names a machinist apprenticeship graduation or machining certificate among its basic qualifications. Other entry routes may differ. |
| Inspection and quality | Check work against quality and safety requirements; some roles involve FAA conformity or first-article inspection. | Washington lists inspectors and related occupations among aerospace apprenticeable occupations. A Boeing quality-inspector apprenticeship result describes training in inspection; check whether a specific posting is open. |
| Fabrication, production and maintenance | Hands-on production, fabrication or equipment-maintenance duties vary by employer and position. | The cited overview establishes these as job families, but does not provide one common qualification for all of them. Read the requirements in each current listing. |
What skills matter for assembly and installation?
Boeing’s assembler-installer guidance highlights reading blueprints, engineering drawings and work instructions; installing mechanical components accurately; completing mechanical assemblies; using hand and power tools and precision measuring equipment; and following manufacturing safety processes. The work is described as physically active, including standing, bending, climbing and tool use. Boeing’s aircraft assembly jobs guidance.

When describing your experience, use specific, truthful examples that connect to those tasks: explain what drawings or controlled instructions you followed, which tools you used, how you measured or fitted parts, and how you handled a safety or quality concern. These are useful ways to make relevant experience clear; they are not a claim about a particular employer’s interview test or scoring system.

Is aerospace experience required?
Not necessarily. For the Boeing assembler-installer role, the listed qualifying experience includes several adjacent fields as well as aerospace. A person moving from another trade should map their actual work to the tasks in the posting, without presenting it as aerospace experience or claiming credentials they do not hold.
- Automotive repair: Show accurate component installation, tool use and mechanical assembly.
- Construction or carpentry: Describe interpreting plans, measuring, fitting materials and working safely.
- Maritime or shipyard work: Highlight industrial work practices, equipment use and assembly tasks.
- Military aircraft maintenance: Explain relevant maintenance experience and procedural discipline.
- Metal fabrication or welding: Name the materials, tools and precision tasks you have actually handled.
- General manufacturing or trade school: Identify the processes and hands-on training that match the job’s requirements.
Boeing names these backgrounds as related preparation for its assembler-installer role; that does not guarantee an applicant will meet every employer’s criteria. Check the employer’s role-specific experience guidance.

When do machining or inspection jobs call for formal training?
Some postings require prior completion of a certificate or apprenticeship, while apprenticeship roles provide structured training. For example, a Boeing Puget Sound machinist apprenticeship posting describes a four-year program with 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training, classroom education and at least 144 classroom hours per school year. Those figures describe that posting’s program; openings, eligibility and conditions can change, so confirm them in the live listing. Check Boeing’s machinist apprenticeship posting.

Washington’s registered apprenticeship framework pairs supervised, structured on-the-job learning with related instruction for occupations requiring manual, mechanical or technical skills. A December 2023 Washington Aerospace Workforce Council report identified three registered programs serving aerospace in the state: AJAC, the Northwest Machinists Apprenticeship Committee and the IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship Committee. Relevant occupations included machinists, machine operators, welders, inspectors and CNC programmers/operators. The report describes the landscape as of its publication; confirm a program’s current intake and eligibility directly. Read the Washington Aerospace Workforce Council report.
How should you prepare an application?
- Choose a job family. Decide whether your experience best matches assembly, machining, fabrication, inspection, production or maintenance.
- Read the full live posting. Separate required experience or credentials from preferred qualifications, and check the work location, physical demands and shift details listed for that position.
- Translate your experience accurately. Name the tools, materials and tasks you have used, and describe how you followed drawings, instructions, safety processes and quality steps.
- Identify a training gap. If a listing requires an apprenticeship or machining certificate you do not have, look for an entry-level apprenticeship or a relevant training route rather than implying you already hold the qualification.
- Keep claims precise. Do not claim aerospace experience, certifications or inspection authority unless you actually have them.
A basic digital caliper can be one way to practice measurement concepts, but Boeing’s reference to precision measuring equipment does not make a caliper a hiring requirement, prescribe a particular model or replace employer training.

What do Washington’s apprenticeship figures mean?
The December 2023 Washington Aerospace Workforce Council report counted 459 active registered apprentices in qualifying occupations across the three programs for FY 2022. The report also estimated apprenticeship utilization at 3.4% for aerospace manufacturing employers with less than $90 million in taxable revenue for FY 2022, using assumptions because a precise aerospace-wide rate was unavailable. Neither figure is a current count or a definitive rate for the entire aerospace industry. Consult the report for its scope and methodology.
