Start with the largest CSS width at which an image will render, create responsive candidates for smaller layouts and higher-density screens, reserve its layout space with width and height, and compress it in a suitable format. A generic rule such as “always use 1,200px” or “always use 1,920px” is wrong for many layouts.
Choose dimensions from the rendered slot
The browser displays an image inside a CSS slot: a content column, card, hero region, avatar, or another element. Measure that slot at its widest relevant breakpoint. That rendered CSS width is your starting source width for a 1× display.
Common starting points
| Use case | Typical rendered width | Starting source strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Article body in a centered column | About 650–850 CSS px, depending on the theme | Provide a candidate near the column width, plus smaller and larger variants when needed |
| Two- or three-column card | Often 250–450 CSS px | Use a candidate near the card width and a larger one for high-density screens |
| Full-bleed desktop hero | Can approach the viewport or content max width | Measure the largest desktop slot; add mobile-specific candidates or art direction if composition changes |
| Small icon or avatar | Usually 24–200 CSS px | Keep the intrinsic image close to the displayed size unless a retina candidate is required |
For a 500px by 500px rendered container, web.dev gives an approximately 500px by 500px image as the optimal size when other variables are held constant. That is a container-specific example, not a universal target.
Account for pixel density
A device with a device-pixel ratio (DPR) of 2 can use roughly twice the intrinsic width for the same CSS slot. For a 500px slot, a 1,000px candidate can preserve detail on a DPR-2 screen. Do not blindly double every image: the extra pixels increase transfer and decoding cost, and the browser chooses among candidates according to layout, DPR, connection, and its own heuristics.

Serve responsive candidates with srcset and sizes
One oversized file wastes bytes on phones; one small file looks soft on large or high-density displays. Supply several intrinsic widths and let the browser select one.
<img
src="photo-800.jpg"
width="800"
height="533"
alt="Descriptive alternative text"
loading="eager"
srcset="photo-400.jpg 400w,
photo-800.jpg 800w,
photo-1200.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(min-width: 900px) 800px, 100vw">
What each attribute means
srcsetlists files and their intrinsic widths. Thewdescriptors describe the files; they do not set the CSS display width.sizestells the browser how wide the image is expected to render under the stated conditions. In the example, it is 800 CSS px at 900px and wider, and the viewport width below that.- CSS still controls the displayed size. Changing
sizesdoes not make an image wider or narrower. srcremains a fallback for browsers that do not use the responsive selection.
Write an honest sizes rule
Describe the actual layout, not the file you happen to have. If an image occupies 70vw below 700px and 600px above that, use sizes="(min-width: 700px) 600px, 70vw". If the image is full bleed, 100vw may be appropriate. An inaccurate value can make the browser download an unnecessarily large or small candidate.
Use picture when the crop or format changes
Use picture for art direction, such as a wide desktop crop and a taller mobile crop, or for explicit format fallback. Keep the same subject and meaningful alternative text while ensuring every source has the required dimensions and focal point.
Prevent overflow and layout shift with CSS and intrinsic dimensions
img {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
max-width:100% (or logical max-inline-size:100%) keeps an image inside its container. height:auto preserves its aspect ratio. If a component intentionally crops images, use a fixed box with object-fit:cover rather than stretching the bitmap.

When an image is decorative
Use an empty alt attribute (alt="") for purely decorative imagery so assistive technology skips it. Informative images need concise alternative text that conveys their purpose, not a filename or a list of visual details unrelated to the page.
Pick a format and optimize bytes
Pixel dimensions and file size are related but not identical. Bytes depend on pixel count, compression settings, image complexity, metadata, and format. Web.dev identifies WebP and AVIF as formats that may compress better than PNG or JPEG. Choose the smallest file that preserves the quality required for the image’s role.
| Content | Usually suitable | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Photographs and gradients | WebP, AVIF, or JPEG where compatibility requires it | Banding, ringing, and loss of fine texture at aggressive compression |
| Flat graphics, transparency, or UI screenshots | WebP or PNG; AVIF where your delivery stack supports it | Text and sharp edges can reveal compression artifacts |
| Simple line art or logos | SVG when the asset is genuinely vector | Do not rasterize a scalable logo at an unnecessarily large size |
There is no universally correct kilobyte ceiling established for every web image. Set a performance budget for your page and compare visual quality at the actual rendered size, network conditions, and device classes you support. Strip unnecessary metadata when your workflow permits it, and retain a fallback format when a target browser or image pipeline requires one.
Should mobile and desktop use different image sizes?
Usually yes for delivery, not necessarily for design. Use one responsive image with multiple candidates when the composition is the same. Use separate crops with picture when a wide desktop image becomes unreadable or poorly framed on a narrow screen. The browser can then download a file appropriate to the viewport instead of receiving a desktop hero that is immediately cropped by CSS.
Do not confuse download size with display size
A 1,200px file can render at 600px, and a 600px file can be stretched to 1,200px. CSS determines display; intrinsic dimensions determine available detail and the candidates the browser can select. Test the actual component at each breakpoint.

WordPress responsive-image behavior
WordPress can generate responsive candidates and add native srcset and sizes markup. Its developer documentation lists a default maximum srcset width of 2,048px and a medium_large intermediate size of 768px. Themes and plugins can customize these values, so inspect the generated HTML rather than assuming every WordPress site uses the defaults.
Check what WordPress really emitted
- Open the page source or browser inspector and locate the image element.
- Review every URL and width in
srcset, then read thesizesvalue. - Compare those candidates with the widest CSS slot at each breakpoint.
- If a required width is missing, adjust the image-size configuration or optimization pipeline, regenerate thumbnails, and verify the new markup.
A repeatable sizing workflow
- Measure the slot: inspect the largest rendered CSS width, including the widest breakpoint and any full-bleed state.
- Create a 1× candidate: make one source close to that width rather than defaulting to a global 1,200px or 1,920px rule.
- Add coverage: include smaller candidates for narrow layouts and larger candidates when DPR or a genuinely larger slot justifies them.
- Describe layout: write
sizesvalues that match the real component widths. - Reserve space: set matching
widthandheightattributes. - Style fluidly: use
max-width:100%andheight:auto, or an intentional crop rule. - Compress and compare: test WebP or AVIF where supported, retain fallbacks where needed, and inspect text, edges, faces, and gradients at the rendered size.
- Validate: test slow connections, mobile and desktop breakpoints, DPR-1 and high-density displays, and cache behavior.
Troubleshooting image sizing problems
The image overflows its column
Check for a missing max-width:100%, a fixed width larger than the parent, or an intrinsic-size rule from a component library. Apply a fluid rule and inspect margins, borders, and transforms that may add to the width.
Recommended Free Tools
The image looks blurry on a phone
Confirm that srcset contains a sufficiently large candidate and that sizes does not claim a falsely narrow slot. Also check whether an optimizer is serving a low-quality derivative or whether CSS is enlarging a small source.
The browser downloads a desktop-sized file on mobile
Inspect the effective sizes value and media conditions. A missing or inaccurate sizes declaration can cause the browser to choose a larger candidate than the mobile slot needs.
The page jumps while images load
Add intrinsic width and height values matching the image ratio, or reserve space with an aspect-ratio box when the final source is dynamic. Avoid changing the ratio after layout.

Text in a screenshot is unreadable
Do not solve every readability problem with a globally larger image. Measure the screenshot’s rendered slot, provide an appropriate high-density candidate, use a format and quality setting that preserves sharp edges, and consider a larger or separately cropped asset when the text must be legible.
Modern formats fail in a target environment
Verify server MIME types, CDN transformation support, and browser coverage. Provide a JPEG or PNG fallback through your delivery mechanism when the environment cannot decode WebP or AVIF.

FAQ
Is 1,200px wide enough for a website image?
Only if the largest rendered slot and the required pixel density are covered. It is a reasonable candidate for some content columns, but it is not a universal standard.
What is the ideal image file size in kilobytes?
No universal current ceiling applies to every role. Set a page-specific budget, then choose the smallest file that meets visual and accessibility requirements.
Can CSS alone make images responsive?
CSS prevents overflow and controls display size, but it cannot replace responsive source selection. Use srcset and sizes to avoid downloading unsuitable files.

Should I export every image at 1920px?
No. Export for the largest real CSS slot, then add candidates only where layout width or pixel density requires them.
Do width and height attributes force an image to that size?
No. They provide intrinsic dimensions and reserve space; responsive CSS can still scale the image.
When should I make a separate mobile crop?
Use a separate crop when the desktop composition becomes poorly framed or its important content is lost on a narrow viewport; otherwise responsive candidates of the same composition are simpler.
