There is no single setting that smooths every 3D print. The change depends on where the roughness is. For a flat, visible top surface, try slicer ironing. For stair-stepped layer lines on a sloped or curved wall, reduce the layer height, or use adaptive layer height if your slicer supports it. For roughness on the bottom face, look at the first layer and bed preparation rather than ironing. Your printer, slicer, nozzle, filament, and the specific defect all affect the result, so no universal numeric profile applies.

Identify which surface is rough

Before changing anything, decide which face of the print looks wrong. The three most common cases call for different settings.

Visible problem Where it appears Setting to change first Main trade-off
Gaps, pits, or raised ridges on a flat top Top solid surfaces such as lids, badges, and nameplates Slicer ironing Longer print time; edges can become slightly fuzzy
Stair-stepped layer lines Sloped or curved side walls Layer height, or adaptive layer height where supported More layers and longer print time
Rough or uneven bottom texture The first layer, which sits against the bed First-layer height and bed surface preparation Squishing the first layer too hard can cause its own adhesion and finish problems

Other roughness, such as seam bumps or rough walls that are not clearly sloped, needs a separate diagnosis. Neither ironing nor layer height is the first fix for those.

Ironing: the setting for flat top surfaces

Prusa’s documentation describes ironing as a second infill pass on the same layer. The hot nozzle runs across a flat top surface, flattening raised plastic and using a small amount of filament to fill holes. Because it works only on flat tops, it has little or no effect on round objects or organic shapes such as vases and sculpted figures.

Where to find it

Enable the ironing option in your slicer. Its name and location vary by slicer and version, so look for a top-surface or ironing section in the print settings. Expect the option to add time to the print.

Tuning the three controls

Ironing has three main controls:

  • Ironing flow: The amount of filament extruded during the pass. Too little flow can leave grooves in the top surface. Too much drags excess plastic toward the edges.
  • Spacing between passes: Keep the spacing smaller than the nozzle diameter so that each pass overlaps the last.
  • Speed: Slower speeds generally work better. Prusa does not prescribe a universal numeric speed, so test within your own machine’s limits.

Ironing is sensitive to extrusion calibration. Print a small sample and change one control at a time, so you can tell which change caused any improvement or new defect.

Material and heat trade-offs

  • PLA and ASA: Prusa reports good ironing behavior for these materials, with material-specific caveats.
  • PETG: It may stick to the nozzle more readily during ironing.
  • Wood-filled filament: Prusa’s tests reported poor results.
  • Slow, low-extrusion passes: On some machines, especially with PLA in warm room conditions, these can cause heat creep or a clogged hotend.

These are manufacturer observations, not guarantees for every printer or brand. Check your filament’s recommended profile before you rely on ironing with a new material.

Layer height for sloped and curved walls

When the visible defect is stair-stepping on an angled or curved wall, layer height is the relevant control. Smaller layers reduce the apparent step size and can improve detail, but they increase the number of layers and the total print time.

Lower layer heights also need more solid layers to keep the same top and bottom thickness, according to Prusa’s documentation. After you reduce layer height, check that your top and bottom solid layer settings still give you solid tops and bottoms.

Use a layer height from your printer’s supported profile. Where the slicer offers adaptive layer height, it varies layer thickness across the model, which can help on angled sections without making the whole print slower. Support for this feature depends on the slicer, so confirm it in your version.

First layer and bed-facing finish

If the rough area is on the bottom of the print, ironing will not fix it, because the bottom is printed first against the bed. Prusa identifies poor first layers as a common source of print trouble and cautions against squishing the first layer excessively to force adhesion. Start by checking first-layer height and bed surface preparation.

A diagnostic sequence that avoids guesswork

  1. Mark which face is rough: the top, a sloped or curved side, or the bottom.
  2. Match the defect to the table above. Gaps or raised plastic on a top point to ironing. Stepping on a slope points to layer height. Texture on the bottom points to the first layer.
  3. Check the filament’s recommended profile and your printer’s setup. UltiMaker’s official Cura documentation on quality settings groups print speed, nozzle temperature, and first-layer height under quality controls, so one change can affect more than one result.
  4. Change one relevant setting.
  5. Print a small test piece and compare it with the previous print before changing anything else.

Working this way tells you whether the setting helped, which is the information you need to refine the next change.
