A dedicated launch is worth considering when your mission needs control of its orbit or timing, unusually high use of a vehicle’s capacity, a trajectory rideshare cannot provide, precisely timed rendezvous, or special payload handling. Compare that value with the price, launch cadence, and integration demands of the actual offers—not with assumptions about what “dedicated” guarantees. Before signing, verify technical fit, regulatory readiness, responsibilities, schedule conditions, and the contract’s remedies for delay or failure.

Decide whether your mission needs a dedicated launch

On a rideshare, a primary payload often drives the orbit and schedule. A secondary payload may save money by using available capacity, but it generally has less control over when and where it is deployed. A dedicated mission can offer more scope to tailor the flight, within the vehicle’s capabilities and the provider’s manifest. NASA identifies specific orbit needs, near-full use of vehicle performance, interplanetary trajectories, rendezvous timing, and special environmental conditions as reasons to consider a dedicated flight; these are decision factors, not guarantees about a particular service. See NASA’s SmallSat launch and integration guidance.

Decision factor Dedicated launch Rideshare
Orbit and timing More opportunity to tailor the mission, subject to vehicle performance and the provider’s manifest. A secondary payload generally accommodates the primary mission’s orbit and schedule.
Cost and cadence NASA describes dedicated small-launch options as generally higher-priced and less frequent. Their value depends on what the mission gains from control, capacity, trajectory, or handling. Often a lower-cost route that uses available mass and volume, in exchange for accepting the offered orbit, timing, and constraints.
Integration and accommodations May allow mission-specific accommodations, depending on the provider’s services and fees. Must comply with provider, integrator, and sometimes primary-mission restrictions, including “do no harm” rules.
Key question Are the mission benefits worth the incremental price and cadence trade-off? Can the spacecraft meet its objectives within the offered orbit, date, environment, and restrictions?

Do not treat every shared flight as the same arrangement: a secondary slot on a larger primary mission differs from a dedicated rideshare service. Ask providers to describe the specific flight and your payload’s role in it.

Define the mission the provider must deliver

Orbit, trajectory, and delivery accuracy

State the target altitude and inclination, destination orbit, trajectory, transfer or interplanetary requirements, and acceptable injection accuracy. Identify which parameters are hard limits and which allow flexibility. Ask the provider to confirm in writing whether the proposed flight meets them and what performance margin applies. A rideshare that reaches the right general orbit may still be unsuitable if its injection tolerances or trajectory miss the mission’s requirements.

Launch window and latest acceptable date

Give bidders the required launch window and the latest acceptable launch date, then compare those requirements with the provider’s current manifest, readiness process, and launch frequency. A secondary payload may have little influence over the primary mission’s date. A dedicated small launcher may offer scheduling flexibility in some circumstances, but its lower launch frequency can work against an earlier launch; “dedicated” alone does not establish that a flight will happen sooner.

Payload fit, interface, and environment

Provide mass, dimensions, center of gravity, mounting and separation interface, deployer needs, and environmental limits. Check them against the current payload user guide and interface-control documentation, and obtain a written fit assessment rather than relying on a general vehicle capability statement. Confirm the required performance margin and who supplies adapters, deployers, or separation hardware.

Operational and handling needs

Flag any need for purge, late battery charging, dedicated processing, unusual handling, precise separation timing, multiple destinations, or rendezvous timing. NASA notes that some accommodations may be included in a dedicated service or offered for an added cost; availability and price are provider-specific. For a rideshare, ask for the applicable “do no harm” constraints, including rules affecting transmitters, post-separation deployments, hazardous materials, or other spacecraft safety matters. Requirements vary by provider and integrator.

Compare integration, assurance, and responsibilities

Integration involves more than placing a payload on a vehicle. NASA describes coordination among the launch provider, spacecraft manufacturer, customer, launch range, and sometimes a broker or integrator. A broker can match a mission with launch opportunities; an integrator may also handle compatibility work and physical integration. Establish whether you contract directly with the provider or through an intermediary, then identify who owns technical acceptance, schedule communications, safety documentation, and each integration task.

Ask who is responsible for analyses, testing, transportation, hazardous-operations support, launch-site processing, adapters, and deployers. Match required qualification and verification rigor to the mission’s consequences and funding, and assess the provider’s relevant flight heritage. NASA’s VADR program illustrates one agency procurement approach aimed at risk-tolerant payloads, using commercial practices and reduced agency oversight; it is not a universal assurance standard for commercial launches.

Check licensing and regulatory readiness

First identify the jurisdictions that apply to the operator, spacecraft, launch vehicle, and launch site. Requirements depend on the mission and activity; a U.S. FAA authorization should not be assumed to cover work governed by another regulator.

For commercial launch or reentry activity within its scope, the FAA describes vehicle-operator licensing under Part 450. Its reviews can include safety, policy, payload, environmental, and financial-responsibility elements. A payload review is normally part of authorization, though the FAA says it may be requested separately in advance. A launch-site license is a distinct authorization from a vehicle-operator license. See the FAA’s Vehicle Operator Licenses, licensing process, and licenses, permits, and approvals overview.

The spacecraft owner or operator also remains responsible for applicable spacecraft authorizations, such as radio-frequency, remote-sensing, or laser approvals. Providers or integrators may require evidence of these approvals before integration. Confirm which safety analyses, debris and passivation information, materials and venting data, export-control reviews where relevant, and other licensing evidence must be supplied—and by when—with the relevant regulator and your launch provider.

On March 17, 2026, the FAA said Part 450 can support a license portfolio spanning operations, vehicle configurations, mission profiles, and multiple sites. The FAA reported 14 Part 450 licenses issued since the rule took effect in March 2021. That is a dated count of licenses, not a count of all providers or missions and not evidence that a particular customer mission is covered. Check current authorization records and the specific license scope; the FAA announcement is FAA Streamlines Commercial Space License Approvals. The FAA also publishes answers to common questions about commercial launches and satellite terminology.

Get the commercial and schedule terms in writing

Compare total mission cost, not just the quoted launch price. Include integration, special services, testing, logistics, insurance, and the consequences of a schedule change. The cited public guidance does not establish an apples-to-apples current market price or standard contract protections, so obtain current, mission-specific proposals.

  • Give each bidder the same mission definition, including orbit and injection tolerances, launch window, payload dimensions and mass, center of gravity, interface, separation sequence, hazardous materials, transmitters, and environmental needs.
  • Ask each provider to identify assumptions, margins, constraints, customer-furnished items, and services that change the price. Request a written price breakdown and current integration schedule, testing requirements, and delivery milestones.
  • Require the contract to state how launch delay and scrubs are treated, what happens after a launch failure, whether reflight or refund remedies apply, and the terms for termination and customer-caused delay.
  • Review liability allocation, insurance, and force majeure terms. Do not assume an insurance limit, launch date guarantee, refund, or reflight right unless the offer and contract expressly establish it.
  • Confirm who must provide each authorization, safety document, and technical deliverable, and the deadline for acceptance. Verify the provider’s current vehicle, launch site, flight history, and manifest independently.

Before relying on a provider’s FAA license, verify that the relevant authorization covers the proposed operation. Part 450’s flexibility to cover portfolios does not establish that an individual mission is included.
