To reduce screen flicker, first work out whether it changes with a supported refresh-rate setting, screen brightness, or the room lighting. Those clues can point to different causes: display refresh behavior, rapid changes in emitted light, or reflections and glare. No single setting reliably fixes every kind of flicker.
What can cause screen flicker?
“Flicker” describes what you see or feel, not one specific fault. A display may refresh its image in a way that appears to flicker, its light output may vary over time, or reflections and room lighting may make viewing uncomfortable. These causes call for different checks.
Refresh behavior
A display refreshes its image repeatedly. Refresh rate can affect perceived flicker, but it is only one factor. The FAA’s guidance says, in the context of flight-deck displays, that “The display refresh rate should be sufficient to prevent flicker effects that result in misleading information or difficulty in reading or interpreting information.” That guidance does not establish a universal setting for consumer screens.
Changes in emitted light
LED and OLED systems can respond rapidly to changes in drive current. A display’s light source or dimming electronics may therefore produce temporal changes in light output. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is one possible dimming method, but the behavior depends on the particular implementation; the display’s exact documentation is more useful than assuming all LED or OLED screens behave alike. The U.S. Department of Energy describes temporal light modulation in its flicker research, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory reviews PWM and possible responses to temporal light modulation in a report published November 4, 2022.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Room light and reflections
Reflected glare from windows, overhead lights, or task lighting can make a screen harder to view even when the display itself is not flickering. OSHA’s workstation-environment guidance addresses lighting and reflections as comfort and visibility concerns, not as a fix for electrical or panel flicker.
What should you check first?
Notice what changes the symptom. Does it appear on one display or in one room? Does it change when you select another supported refresh mode or adjust brightness? These comparisons can help narrow down the likely source, but they do not by themselves prove a particular fault.

- If a different supported refresh mode changes the symptom, refresh behavior may be relevant.
- If the symptom changes with brightness, emitted-light modulation or dimming behavior may be involved. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific display.
- If the discomfort changes when you move the screen or alter room lighting, reflections or glare may be contributing.
- If the symptom stays with one display under different settings and lighting, that display may be the likely source.
How to reduce screen flicker or viewing discomfort
Compare supported refresh-rate modes
- Check the display and connected computer documentation to identify refresh modes they both support.
- Select a different supported mode, if one is available, and observe whether the symptom changes.
- Keep the mode that works best for your setup. Do not force an unsupported setting or assume a particular frequency will solve every flicker complaint.
The FAA’s refresh-rate guidance is for flight-deck displays. Separate U.S. Department of Transportation guidance gives historical recommendations for non-interlaced CRTs, including at least 80 Hz and preferably 100 Hz or higher in its stated context. Those CRT figures are not a universal threshold for modern LCD or OLED consumer displays.
Check brightness-related behavior
If the symptom varies with brightness, consult the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and its dimming behavior. LED or OLED light output and PWM-based dimming can involve temporal modulation, but there is no verified brightness setting that fixes every device.

Adjust the screen and room lighting
- Position the monitor at right angles to windows and direct light sources to reduce reflections.
- Adjust task lighting so it does not shine directly on the display or into your eyes.
- Use OSHA’s monitor guidance for advice on monitor placement, viewing distance, and image clarity.
These steps address glare and viewing comfort. They will not correct flicker caused by the display’s refresh behavior or light modulation.
Decide whether the display is the likely source
If the symptom persists, compare how it behaves with the display’s supported settings and in different lighting. If it follows one display rather than the room, a replacement monitor with documented flicker-reduction characteristics is an option to investigate. Check the exact model’s specifications and relevant settings rather than relying only on a generic “flicker-free” label; there is no model-specific performance evidence here to rank current monitors.

Can changing refresh rate reduce screen flicker?
It can help when refresh behavior is contributing and the alternative mode is supported by both the display and computer. It is not a universal cure: brightness-related light modulation and reflected glare have different causes. Historical CRT recommendations should not be applied as guaranteed settings for modern consumer screens.
Why does flicker affect people differently?
Perception varies between individuals and with viewing conditions. Historical U.S. Department of Transportation display guidance notes that flicker may be more apparent in peripheral vision or across a larger screen. That helps explain why two people—or the same person in different conditions—may not experience a display in the same way; it does not identify the cause of a particular complaint.
