Pressing Enter does not always load a new page. The browser responds to the focused context: entering a URL can start navigation, while Enter on a page may activate a control or submit a form. When that action requests a page, the browser fetches its document and resources, turns HTML and CSS into structures it can work with, calculates what should appear and where, then draws the result. That sequence is a useful model—not a single, identical schedule used by every browser.

First, Enter requests an action

The key question is where keyboard focus is. In the address bar, Enter can request navigation to the entered URL. Within a page, it may activate the focused control or submit a form, depending on the control and how the page is built. Some page actions do not navigate at all: they can run JavaScript or update the current page.

When an action does request a new page, navigation is the start of the loading process. The browser sends HTTP requests and receives the main document and related resources. See MDN’s overview of how browsers work and its high-level guide to website loading.

How a requested page becomes pixels

The stages below explain the main work in a practical order. They can overlap or recur: browsers may start processing data before the full page arrives, and later changes can send parts of the page through the pipeline again.

1. HTML is parsed into the DOM

The browser reads the incoming HTML, tokenizes it and builds the Document Object Model (DOM), an in-memory tree describing the document’s structure. Parsing can begin as response data arrives rather than waiting for the entire HTML file.

2. The browser discovers resources

HTML can point to stylesheets, scripts, images and other media. The browser discovers and requests those resources; some can download while HTML parsing continues. Their arrival and dependencies can affect later work, but not every asset blocks parsing.

3. CSS is parsed into the CSSOM

The browser parses CSS into the CSS Object Model (CSSOM), a structure representing style rules and their relationships. The CSSOM is separate from the DOM; the browser needs both document structure and styling information to determine the page’s appearance. MDN describes these dependencies in its critical rendering path guide.

4. Scripts may change the schedule or the page

JavaScript can inspect and modify the document. A classic script without async or defer can pause HTML parsing while it is fetched and executed. Stylesheets can also delay a script if that script may need to query styles. The exact scheduling depends on script type and browser behavior, so these are common dependencies rather than rules for every script.

async and defer change how scripts relate to parsing. In general, async scripts run when ready, while deferred scripts wait until HTML parsing is complete; defer is useful when a script’s execution order matters. The browser can therefore receive page content before all script work is done, and scripts can still change what ultimately needs to be displayed.

5. Styles are calculated and visible content is selected

The browser combines the DOM and CSS rules to calculate computed styles and determine which elements participate in visual output. For example, an element with display: none is excluded from the render tree; visibility: hidden hides an element but leaves it taking up space.

6. Layout calculates geometry

For elements that will be rendered, layout determines dimensions and positions: where boxes fit, how large they are, and how they relate to one another. A later recalculation of layout is commonly called reflow.

7. Paint draws visual details

Painting turns the page’s visual content into drawing operations, including text, colors, borders, shadows and images. The browser can begin showing a result before every resource has finished loading, then paint again as the page changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Compositing combines layers when needed

Some content is painted into separate layers, which the browser can combine in the right order to produce the displayed image. Not every page element gets its own useful GPU layer: layers use memory, so creating more is not automatically better.

Why the browser may repeat work

The first visible result is not necessarily the last rendering pass. New resources can arrive, and JavaScript can change content or styles. Depending on what changed, the browser may recalculate styles, perform layout again, repaint, or recomposite layers.

For example, if an image arrives without reserved dimensions, its actual size can alter the layout after nearby content has already been placed. That can trigger another layout calculation, followed by painting and compositing. Reserving space for content can avoid this kind of shift. MDN’s browser-work guide illustrates this repeat-work pattern.

Geometry changes versus visual changes

An update that changes an element’s size or position may require layout as well as painting. An update limited to visual appearance may require repainting without changing geometry; if layered content is involved, composition may also be needed. The exact work and cost depend on the change, browser engine and device, so no single CSS property has a guaranteed identical cost everywhere.

Where frame timing and animation fit

Rendering work also happens after the initial page appears, especially during animation. MDN gives a nominal interval of 16.7 milliseconds per frame at 60 frames per second; the year for that figure is not stated on the accessed page. This is the available frame interval in that example, not a promise that every page update or navigation completes within that time. Higher-refresh displays have shorter frame intervals; MDN notes 75, 120 and 144 Hz as other refresh rates.

requestAnimationFrame() asks the browser to run a callback before the next repaint. It is one-shot: an animation that needs another update must request another frame from its callback. Its frequency generally follows the display refresh rate, and browsers commonly pause callbacks in background tabs or hidden iframes. See MDN’s animation performance and frame-rate guide and requestAnimationFrame() reference.

Visual rendering is not the browser’s only representation

The browser also builds an accessibility tree that assistive technologies use to interpret page content. It is related to the DOM, and the browser updates it when the DOM changes. This is important browser work, but it is not another step required to turn visual content into pixels. MDN discusses the accessibility tree in its guide to how browsers work.

The useful mental model

  • Enter is an input, not a synonym for “reload”: focus and page behavior determine what action it requests.
  • For navigation, HTML becomes the DOM and CSS becomes the CSSOM.
  • The browser calculates styles and layout before painting the visible page.
  • Some scripts and dependencies delay work, while other resources can load as parsing continues.
  • Late resources or script changes can cause more layout, paint or compositing work.
  • The stages are a teaching model; browser implementations do not all follow one strictly linear internal schedule.
