It does not decide what those objects mean in your product, which relationships are allowed, or whether a saved diagram still meets your rules. Build those decisions into an application-level domain model, then connect that model to React Flow’s rendering and interaction APIs.
What React Flow provides—and what remains yours
The React Flow overview describes a component for rendering nodes and edges and handling user interactions. The quick start shows the basic setup in an existing React project: provide node and edge data, update that state in response to changes, and create connections.
That is a capable editor surface, not a definition of your product’s data model. A diagram of a deployment pipeline, workflow, or electrical system may all use nodes and edges, but their types, required fields, and legal relationships differ. Your application must establish those meanings and enforce the rules that follow from them.
Custom nodes supply your product vocabulary
A custom node is a React component, so it can display domain-specific content and interactive elements such as forms or charts. React Flow continues to handle editor behavior around it, including selection, dragging, and connecting. See the Custom Nodes guide.

Use that flexibility to present useful domain information, but keep the distinction clear: rendering a field in a node does not, by itself, define whether that field is required, valid, or persisted as part of a business record.
Graph interactions do not automatically encode domain policy
React Flow documents connection validation, connection limits, and cycle prevention as patterns for graph behavior. These are useful building blocks, but an example showing how to prevent a cycle does not establish the complete policy for your particular application. The official examples demonstrate such integration patterns.
Define domain entities and invariants first
Before wiring up gestures, describe the document your application considers valid. Specify stable identifiers, node and relationship kinds, required attributes, and permitted lifecycle states. Treat display labels and transient editor state—such as selection or drag position—as distinct concepts from durable business records, even if your implementation stores some of them together.

Then write down the rules that determine whether a graph is meaningful in your domain. Depending on the product, they may include:
- Which source and target node types may be connected.
- Whether particular handles or ports are compatible.
- How many incoming or outgoing relationships an entity may have.
- Whether cycles are allowed, forbidden, or allowed only in certain cases.
- Which node fields are required, and which lifecycle states may coexist.
- Whether rules differ for documents created under older schema versions.
These rules belong to your application’s domain logic. Keeping them explicit makes it possible to apply the same policy to a canvas gesture, an imported document, or a programmatic edit.
Validate proposed connections, but don’t stop at the canvas
The IsValidConnection API defines a callback that receives an Edge or Connection candidate and returns a boolean. Use it to accept or reject a proposed connection as a user makes it.

A boolean is enough for that callback, but not enough to explain a rejection to a person. A useful application design is to have a domain validator return structured results—such as errors or warnings—and adapt its decision to the callback. The editor can then show a message such as “A trigger can connect to one destination only,” rather than silently refusing a gesture. That structured-result layer is an application design choice, not a React Flow API feature.
Do not make the gesture callback the sole enforcement point. Imported or restored data, undo/redo operations, server updates, and other programmatic changes may not pass through the same interaction path. Validate documents wherever your application treats data as authoritative, and test the underlying rules independently of the canvas.

Choose what your application saves
React Flow’s Save and Restore example demonstrates saving flow state with the instance’s toObject method or with local node and edge state. That establishes a way to serialize and restore a diagram; it does not prescribe how a production application should represent its durable domain records.

Choose deliberately between treating serialized flow state as the document and maintaining a separate domain document that the canvas displays. The right choice depends on what your product needs to preserve and validate:
- Do domain records contain fields or relationships that are not part of the canvas representation?
- Must older saved documents remain readable after the data format changes?
- Can edits arrive from outside the diagram editor?
- Where will imports and other untrusted input be validated?
- How should collaboration or undo/redo interact with the authoritative document?
If the document format evolves, define a schema version and a migration and validation approach. Versioning is an architectural recommendation, not a feature guaranteed by the save-and-restore example. Whatever representation you choose, test domain invariants against representative documents and test the adapter that maps a proposed React Flow connection to those rules.

A practical boundary is to let React Flow manage graph presentation and interaction while application code owns the meanings and validity of the document. Custom nodes translate domain concepts into usable visuals; connection callbacks translate proposed gestures into domain decisions; persistence code translates between editor state and the format your application promises to store.

This is a design synthesis from React Flow’s documented extension points, not a single architecture mandated by its documentation. It helps avoid a common failure mode: a diagram that looks editable and saves successfully, but can contain invalid or outdated domain data.
Where advanced examples fit
The official site marks advanced examples for capabilities such as edge routing and collaboration as Pro examples; the examples also cover helper lines and undo/redo. See React Flow examples and the React Flow Pro page. Treat these as options to evaluate against specific requirements, not as substitutes for defining your domain rules.
