Start by matching the RAM generation to your motherboard: AM4 systems use DDR4, while AM5 boards for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 use dual-channel DDR5. For a typical new AM5 build, a matched 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 kit with AMD EXPO is a practical starting point—but confirm the exact kit against your motherboard’s memory support list before buying.
Check the socket and DDR generation first
RAM compatibility is determined by the motherboard as well as the CPU. AM4 and AM5 use different memory generations, and DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. AMD identifies AM5 as the platform for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 processors, with dual-channel DDR5 memory and AMD EXPO support: AMD Socket AM5.
| Platform | Memory generation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| AM4 | DDR4 | Check the motherboard’s CPU support and memory QVL for the exact processor and kit. |
| AM5 | DDR5 | Check the motherboard’s CPU support, memory QVL and BIOS support for the exact processor and kit. |
If you are replacing memory in an existing PC, identify the motherboard model before shopping. Do not buy DDR5 for an AM4 board or DDR4 for an AM5 board.
Choose a matched kit, then verify it on the motherboard QVL
For a typical AM5 gaming or everyday system, a matched two-DIMM kit is a sensible starting point: 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 with AMD EXPO. AMD’s EXPO testing documents 32GB DDR5-6000 configurations at CL28, CL30 and CL36 using a Ryzen 7 9700X test system; AMD Performance Labs conducted the testing in March 2026. That establishes those tested configurations, not a guarantee that every CPU and motherboard will run every kit at its rated setting. See AMD EXPO Technology.

Before purchasing, find the exact motherboard model on the manufacturer’s support site and check its memory QVL (Qualified Vendors List). Check that the listed memory part number, capacity and DIMM arrangement match the kit you intend to buy. Also check the CPU support page and BIOS notes for your processor. AMD’s own Ryzen memory compatibility list can be a useful cross-check, but it does not replace motherboard-level validation. For example, AMD lists Kingston FURY KF552C36BBE-16 as an AM5/DDR5 EXPO module with JEDEC 4800 and an overclocked 5200 timing; those listed figures describe that module, not a universal AM5 speed: AMD Ryzen Overclocked Memory Compatibility List.
- Match DDR generation to the board: DDR4 for AM4 or DDR5 for AM5.
- Prefer a single matched kit rather than combining separate kits, even if their labels look similar.
- Confirm the exact part number and number of DIMMs on the board’s QVL.
- Check physical DIMM height against the CPU cooler and case clearance.
- Compare rated data rate, CAS latency (CL), primary timings, warranty and price.
What AMD EXPO does—and what it does not guarantee
AMD EXPO is a memory overclocking profile stored on supported RAM. Selecting the profile in the motherboard’s firmware applies the kit’s rated memory settings more easily than entering timings manually. AMD documents EXPO support for AM5 and memory overclocking in its Ryzen 7000 Series Desktop Processors Quick Reference Guide.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
A kit’s advertised profile is not a promise that the same speed will be stable in every system. The final result depends on the CPU’s memory controller, motherboard, BIOS, kit and DIMM count. EXPO is optional: the system can use supported default memory settings without enabling it, though the memory may then run below the kit’s advertised profile. After enabling a profile, check that the system boots reliably and test stability; if it does not, return to default settings or try a lower memory speed.

How much RAM should you buy?
Capacity depends on what you run at the same time. Use 32GB as a general baseline for gaming and everyday use. Consider 64GB for heavy multitasking, content-creation workloads, large datasets or virtual machines. Before choosing the larger capacity, check the motherboard’s maximum supported capacity and its guidance for the number and type of DIMMs; filling more slots or using higher-capacity modules can affect achievable memory speed.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Upgrade Your DDR5 Gaming or Performance Laptop: DDR5 SODIMM memory modules deliver faster frequencies, greater capacities, lower power consumption, and high performance to tackle the most demanding tasks, games, and workloads.
- Compatible with Nearly Any Intel and AMD System: Industry-standard SODIMM form-factor is compatible with a wide range of popular Intel and AMD gaming and performance laptops, small-form-factor PCs, and Intel NUC kits.
- Easy Installation: Simple installation process – just a screwdriver is required for most laptops.
- Maximum Speed Boost: VENGEANCE SODIMM automatically sets to maximum speed on compatible systems for faster load times, multitasking, and more – no need to set in BIOS.
How to compare two RAM kits
Compare kits only after confirming that both use the correct DDR generation and fit the motherboard. Rated speed alone is not enough: include capacity, DIMM count, timings, profile support and board validation in the decision.
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| DDR generation and platform | Must match the motherboard; AM4 uses DDR4 and AM5 uses DDR5. |
| Capacity and DIMM count | Determine how much memory is installed and how many slots are occupied; a matched two-DIMM kit is a practical AM5 starting point. |
| Rated data rate and timings | Describe the kit’s profile settings. Check whether the motherboard and CPU combination can run them stably. |
| AMD EXPO | Provides a convenient profile for supported AMD systems; it remains an overclocking setting. |
| Motherboard QVL | Shows whether the board maker has validated the exact kit or configuration. |
| Physical clearance, warranty and price | Help establish whether the kit fits the build and represents suitable value. |
A motherboard’s advertised maximum overclocked memory speed is not a guarantee for every CPU, kit or DIMM configuration. Treat it as a platform limit, then use the board QVL and the memory kit’s specifications to narrow the choices.
