Do I need to know everything before making my first open-source contribution? No. In Hitesh Kumar’s account, contributing was a way to learn how real projects work beyond tutorials: by reading existing code, taking on small tasks, and communicating with other developers. As he puts it, “You can start small.”

What I learned by looking before writing

When I began contributing, I wanted to understand how software is built outside the tidy boundaries of a tutorial. A real project already has decisions, conventions, and history. Reading its code and learning how its pieces fit together taught me about that context before I tried to change anything.

The surrounding work mattered, too. Opening issues, following pull-request reviews, fixing bugs, and communicating with other developers were all part of learning how a project moves forward. The lesson for me was that contributing is not only a matter of knowing a language or framework; it also means understanding how people coordinate and improve software.

Through that process, I became more comfortable with technologies including React, Node.js, TypeScript, MongoDB, Next.js, and REST APIs. That is my experience, not a claim that every contributor will learn the same technologies or have the same path.

Why a first contribution can be small

I did not need to know everything before I started. A useful first step might be fixing a small bug, improving documentation, choosing an issue marked for beginners, helping another contributor, or asking a question. Open Source Guides also identifies work such as issue triage, answering questions, reviewing changes, and mentoring as ways to contribute—not just writing code (Open Source Guides: How to Contribute to Open Source).

A small task can teach you how a project handles changes without requiring you to take on a large, uncertain piece of work. The point is to match your effort to something the project actually needs.

How to find a good first task

  1. Choose a project you use or care about. Familiarity with its purpose makes it easier to understand who benefits from a proposed change.
  2. Read the README and contribution instructions. Look for the project’s own expectations about setup, tests, style, and submitting changes.
  3. Review recent activity. Recent commits, issues, pull requests, and maintainer responses can help you judge whether the project is active, how work is discussed, and how clearly its conventions are explained.
  4. Check the discussion before picking a task. Read the history of an issue or pull request so you do not duplicate work or miss relevant decisions.
  5. Ask a concise, contextual question in the project’s public channel. Explain what you want to do and what you have already checked; follow the channel the project specifies.
  6. Choose a task that fits the project’s needs and your capacity. For substantial work, check with the project before investing significant effort. Then follow its review, testing, and submission requirements.

There is no single workflow every project follows. The project’s own instructions and review process take precedence over a generic checklist.

What project communication taught me

Issues and pull requests are places to exchange context, not just boxes to check before code can be merged. Reviews can reveal why a change needs adjustment; questions can uncover assumptions that are not obvious from the code alone. Open Source Guides recommends reading contribution instructions and earlier discussion, and giving enough context when asking questions or proposing a change (Open Source Guides: How to Contribute to Open Source).

Open source means more than public code

Seeing source code online does not, by itself, establish that anyone may reuse or redistribute it. Open Source Guides describes open-source software in terms of permission under an open-source license to use, study, modify, and distribute it (Open Source Initiative: The Open Source Definition). For contributors, that is a reminder that openness involves the project’s legal terms as well as its collaborative practices.
