“Not ready writing device PRN” is a legacy DOS-style printer error: the computer or program tried to send output to the printer, but the printer device was not ready to receive it. PRN refers to the printer in this error context. The message identifies a readiness problem, not one specific cause or a part that must be replaced.
What does PRN mean?
PRN is the printer device name in this message. A 2000 U.S. Air Force communications guide explicitly notes that “in any error notices PRN refers to the printer.” The phrase appears there among Windows-generated notices encountered while using a particular communications program, so that guide documents a specific historical setting rather than a universal explanation of every printer error.
What does “not ready” mean?
IBM’s September 1983 DOS 2.10 manual defines the generic device-error message this way: “The named device is not ready to accept or transmit data.” In this case, the named device is PRN—the printer—so the program could not send its output at that time.

The wording does not diagnose a particular printer, connection, or hardware fault. A computing textbook’s DOS example notes that the message may appear if no printer is attached or if the printer is not ready. The Air Force guide lists a different context-specific condition: the SEL indicator light being off. That indicator example should not be assumed to apply to other printers.

How to check a printer that reports “not ready”
- Check power. Confirm the printer is switched on.
- Check the connection. Make sure it is connected to the computer or printing system and that the connection is secure.
- Check readiness. Look at the printer’s display or status lights and confirm it is online or ready. If a specific indicator is mentioned, consult that printer’s documentation; the SEL-light reference in the Air Force guide applies to its own environment.
- Retry the operation. After correcting any printer-side issue, try again. The Air Force guide instructs its users to correct the printer problem and then press R to retry; the IBM manual also advises checking the device and retrying. The key or control depends on the application.
If the message keeps appearing
If the printer is powered, connected, and showing ready status but the error continues, the historical references do not identify a specific next repair, printer part, or diagnostic tool. Check the instructions for the program that produced the message and the documentation for the printer and connection in use. Do not treat the wording alone as proof that a component needs replacement.
