Bitcoin’s price moves when buyers and sellers change what they are willing to pay. Jobs reports and interest-rate news can influence those decisions by shifting expectations for growth, inflation, yields, the dollar, and risk-taking. Trading liquidity and leverage can then magnify a move. None of these factors reliably dictates Bitcoin’s next direction on its own.
What moves Bitcoin’s price?
Bitcoin has no contractual coupon or earnings stream, so its price is not set by a single published economic measure. It reflects market participants’ changing views of future demand, risk, and the amount of buying or selling they can execute at current prices. Economic news matters when it changes those views; crypto-market flows and positioning can amplify or offset the reaction.
That distinction matters: a jobs number or a Federal Reserve decision is not a mechanical trigger. The same headline can lead to different price reactions depending on what investors expected beforehand and how they interpret it alongside other information.
Does the jobs report affect Bitcoin?
Markets react to what the report changes
A jobs report can affect expectations for economic growth, inflation, and the future path of Federal Reserve policy. A stronger-than-expected report might suggest resilient demand or that rates could remain higher for longer. A weaker report might be read as disinflationary—or as a sign of economic stress. Which interpretation dominates depends on the wider inflation and policy context.

The Federal Reserve’s Monetary Policy Report – July 2026 discusses labor-market conditions alongside market-implied federal-funds-rate expectations and Treasury yields. Its labor-market observations run through June 2026; they are not October 2026 readings. In that report, PCE inflation was 4.1% over the 12 months ending in May 2026, and core PCE inflation was 3.4% over the same period. Those figures describe the report’s reference period, not current October inflation.
Check the release and its revisions
For payroll and unemployment figures, consult the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly Employment Situation release. When citing a number, identify its reference month and publication date, and note revisions where relevant: a headline estimate can later be revised. No October 2026 employment figure is asserted here.

Even when a release moves financial markets, that does not establish that it caused a particular Bitcoin move. The useful question is whether the release changed expectations—and whether other news or crypto-specific trading was moving prices at the same time.

Does Bitcoin go up when interest rates fall?
Rate news works through other markets
Lower expected rates may reduce the relative appeal of some safer interest-bearing assets, ease financing conditions, or affect the dollar and broader risk appetite. Those channels can be supportive of volatile assets such as Bitcoin, but they do not guarantee a price rise. A cut that was already expected may cause little surprise; a cut prompted by worsening economic conditions can arrive alongside greater risk aversion.

Separate the Federal Reserve’s actual policy decision from market pricing of possible future decisions. The official FOMC materials establish what the committee decided. Market-implied expectations and Treasury yields show how investors are pricing the outlook; they are not a promise by the Fed about future rates.
Evidence on Bitcoin’s immediate response is mixed
A February 2023 New York Fed Staff Report by Gianluca Benigno and Carlo Rosa, The Bitcoin–Macro Disconnect, found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in its intraday event study, unlike other U.S. asset classes. That is a finding for the study’s sample and method, not proof that rates never matter or that the relationship must persist in later market conditions.

What does liquidity mean for Bitcoin?
“Liquidity” can refer to several different things. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of one global pool of money.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Funding and reserve conditions: measures related to bank reserves, repo financing, and broader funding markets.
- Treasury-market liquidity: how readily government bonds can be traded without substantial price impact. The New York Fed’s Treasury repo reference rates describe repo-market financing, not Bitcoin order-book depth.
- Crypto trading liquidity: market-specific measures such as order-book depth, bid-ask spreads, trading volume, and derivatives positioning.
- Crypto ETP liquidity: spreads, turnover, flows, and the relationship between an exchange-traded product’s market price and its net asset value (NAV).
Why trading depth matters
When fewer orders are available near the current price, a given imbalance between buyers and sellers may move prices more than it would in a deeper market. Leverage can intensify that move: if prices fall far enough, leveraged long positions may be liquidated, adding forced selling; liquidations of short positions can add forced buying in a rising market.

The Bank for International Settlements’ March 2026 Quarterly Review described Bitcoin falling about 50% from its 2025 highs and touching 2024 levels during the episode it examined. The BIS said liquidations of leveraged long crypto positions probably exacerbated the sell-off. This is evidence about that episode, not a claim that every Bitcoin decline is driven by liquidations.
ETP trading does not explain spot prices by itself
The Federal Reserve Board’s March 28, 2025 note, Crypto ETPs: An Examination of Liquidity and NAV Premium, found in its observed dataset that larger ETPs and ETFs tended to have tighter bid-ask spreads, while more liquid reference assets tended to track NAV more closely. The note also describes frictions that can make arbitrage between crypto markets and equity-listed ETPs difficult. These observations do not establish that ETP inflows alone set Bitcoin’s spot price.
The scale figures in that note have specific historical scope: crypto ETPs had aggregate market capitalization of roughly $100 billion in late December 2024, and 13-F filers held roughly 20% of crypto ETPs’ outstanding shares according to data through September 2024. The first figure covers crypto ETPs, not Bitcoin alone; the second describes the share of ETP shares held by reporting filers, not a direct measure of current trading or ownership.
How do jobs, rates, and liquidity differ?
| Driver | What to watch | How it can affect Bitcoin | What the evidence does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jobs data | BLS Employment Situation release, including its reference month and revisions | Can shift expectations for growth, inflation, and policy | Official labor observations are dated; a release alone does not prove the cause of a Bitcoin move. |
| Interest rates | FOMC decisions, market-implied policy expectations, and Treasury yields | Can affect opportunity cost, financing conditions, the dollar, and risk appetite | The New York Fed’s 2023 intraday study found no measurable macro-news relationship in its sample; that result is not universal. |
| Liquidity and leverage | Specify the market: funding or repo conditions, Treasury liquidity, crypto order books, ETP spreads and flows, or derivatives positioning | Can change how much prices move for an order imbalance and can contribute to forced trades | The Fed ETP note reports market-function observations; the BIS describes leverage amplifying one historical sell-off. Neither establishes a permanent ranking of drivers. |
Scheduled data and central-bank communications can prompt rapid repricing. Liquidity and leverage can affect the initial response as well as any later cascade. There is no supported permanent ranking of these factors: an average intraday macro response may be difficult to detect in one study, while leverage can still amplify a particular episode.
Quick Recap
How can you assess a Bitcoin move?
- Start with the event and its timing. Identify the jobs release, FOMC announcement, or other news, and compare its publication time with the price move.
- Ask what changed versus expectations. A market’s response depends on the surprise and its interpretation, not just whether a headline number was high, low, or a rate was cut.
- Follow the proposed transmission channel. For labor news, look for changes in growth, inflation, and policy expectations. For rate news, distinguish the official decision from market pricing and check Treasury yields or currency context.
- Name the liquidity measure. Do not infer Bitcoin trading depth from bank reserves, repo rates, or Treasury-market conditions. For a crypto-market explanation, seek crypto-specific order-book, spread, ETP, or derivatives data.
- Look for amplification or an offset. Consider whether leveraged positioning or forced liquidations may have intensified the move, and whether contemporaneous crypto-specific flows or other news may have countered the macro signal.
- Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence. Co-movement is not proof of causation, and one episode cannot establish a lasting rule for Bitcoin’s response.
