Microsoft 365 Apps is a subscription for Microsoft productivity applications, including locally installed desktop apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The apps are downloaded and installed on supported devices; they do not run in the cloud simply because they are offered through a cloud-based service. The name can also refer to the apps component of a broader Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription.
What does Microsoft 365 Apps mean?
Microsoft describes Microsoft 365 Apps as a subscription service that provides current versions of familiar Office applications. Its licensing guidance identifies the suite as desktop applications that can be licensed on their own or included through other Microsoft 365 and Office 365 subscriptions. Microsoft’s Office applications service description explains that the apps are downloaded and installed locally.
That makes “Microsoft 365 Apps” narrower than “Microsoft 365.” The former refers to the productivity-app component; the latter can describe a broader offering that combines apps with services such as email, file storage, collaboration, meetings, security, or administration. The exact bundle depends on the subscription. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 for enterprise overview describes this broader model.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are common core desktop apps. Microsoft’s licensing guidance also describes OneNote, Publisher, and Access in the suite, while its service comparison shows that availability varies by subscription and platform. Do not assume every listed app is available on every device or under every plan.
For example, Microsoft’s U.S. enterprise page for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise lists desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Check the applicable plan and platform details in Microsoft’s current U.S. Apps for enterprise page and Microsoft’s service-description comparison.
Project and Visio are separate products, not included with Microsoft 365 Apps according to Microsoft’s cited enterprise licensing documentation. Other subscription plans may offer them; check the specific plan rather than treating them as part of the Apps suite. Microsoft’s licensing documentation covers the distinction.

Do Microsoft 365 Apps run in the cloud?
No. The desktop applications are downloaded from the Microsoft 365 portal and installed on a supported computer using Microsoft’s Click-to-Run installation technology. Microsoft states: “Even though it is a cloud-based service, Microsoft 365 apps don’t run in the cloud.” The cloud connection is part of how the subscription and related services are provided, not a description of where the desktop apps execute. See the Office applications service description for supported systems and installation details.
Web and mobile versions are distinct from the desktop applications. Their availability and capabilities depend on the subscription, app, and device, so confirm platform-specific entitlements in Microsoft’s service comparison.

How is it different from a broader Microsoft 365 subscription?
A standalone Apps subscription focuses on productivity applications. Broader Microsoft 365 or Office 365 plans can package apps with additional online services, but their included features vary. Microsoft’s current U.S. enterprise Apps page and service comparison illustrate why the name alone is not enough to establish a plan’s full entitlements.
Before choosing or administering a subscription, verify the plan’s included apps and services, supported platforms, user and device terms, region, and current billing terms on the relevant Microsoft plan page. Names, features, prices, and availability can change.

What organizations should check before deployment
Organizations deploying the desktop apps should assess compatibility and administration needs before installation. Microsoft’s deployment guidance covers deployment methods, update management, licensing, and activation; its assessment guidance identifies the practical checks administrators should make:
