A smart ring does not read your medical chart. Its sensors collect body signals, while a separate app feature may connect to a healthcare provider and import records. The ring can then show wellness summaries and trends; those are not the same as a diagnosis. Oura and Samsung document record-connection features, but eligibility, records and availability depend on the service—not simply on owning a ring.

Two different kinds of information: sensor data and medical records

A ring measures signals from your body, and its app uses them to produce estimates, scores and trends. Medical records, by contrast, come from a healthcare provider through a connected-records feature. The ring’s sensors do not retrieve diagnoses, prescriptions or lab results.

For example, Oura says its ring measures heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), respiratory rate, temperature trends, movement and blood oxygen. Its app uses measurements to provide wellness insights about sleep, readiness, activity, stress and resilience, heart health, and—where available—metabolic and women’s health. The available features vary by device, membership and location. See Oura’s explanation of its measurements and insights.

Samsung describes Galaxy Ring reports such as sleep patterns and a personal energy score in its companion apps. Samsung’s sleep guide identifies heart rate, blood oxygen and skin temperature as inputs. These are device-generated summaries for personal reference, not diagnoses. See Samsung’s Galaxy Ring support information and Samsung’s sleep-tracking guide.

What medical records can a ring’s connected app access?

Record access is an app and provider-connection feature. The two documented examples below are different services; neither means the ring itself is a medical-record reader.

Oura Health Records

Oura’s Health Records feature can import provider-sourced electronic health records (EHRs) into the Oura app. Oura lists four record groups:

  • Conditions: chronic and acute diagnoses.
  • Medications: prescribed drugs listed by exact name.
  • Lab results: compatible lab-panel history.
  • Allergies: documented allergens.

Oura says the app shows the source provider for each record. Users can choose which records to share with Oura Advisor, exclude records from its context and download their raw EHR information from a connected provider. Imported records can inform Advisor responses and Health Panels; the Advisor does not diagnose, give medication advice or determine whether a lab result needs emergency attention. Details are in Oura’s Health Records help page.

Samsung Health Records

Samsung Health Records is a Samsung Health feature, not a Galaxy Ring feature. Samsung support lists allergies, current conditions, immunizations and medications. Samsung’s announcement also names vaccination and prescription records, past hospital visits and test results. In the United States, Samsung identifies b.well Connected Health as the service powering the feature. Availability varies by market, and Samsung says records should not be used as the basis for medical decisions. See Samsung Health Records support and Samsung’s October 21, 2024 announcement.

Who can connect records, and where?

Oura’s help page, last updated June 9, 2026, says Health Records is opt-in and available in the United States, excluding U.S. territories. It requires an Oura Ring Gen3 or later, an active membership, and the Oura app on iOS or Android; Gen2 and older are not supported. Oura describes identity verification through CLEAR and record retrieval through Flexpa, using TEFCA or direct Patient Access APIs depending on the provider. Some Epic MyChart users may need to authenticate with their health system. These are the requirements Oura documents for this feature, not a general guarantee that every provider’s records will connect.

Samsung says Samsung Health Records availability varies by market. Its U.S. feature description does not establish availability or identical record categories in every country. Check the relevant app and provider connection for your location before relying on access.

What can a ring actually tell you?

A ring can help you notice changes and patterns in the signals it tracks, such as sleep timing or resting heart-rate trends. A pattern or unusual score can be useful context for a conversation with a clinician, but it does not establish that you have a condition. Oura says its algorithms are tested against healthy adults and notes that some health conditions and medicines can affect measurements or insights.

Oura specifically cautions that arrhythmias, cardiovascular conditions and some medications may affect resting heart rate, HRV or sleep staging. Finger-circulation conditions such as Raynaud’s can make pulse measurement difficult. Oura also says its ring cannot diagnose sleep apnea, though it may offer sleep-quality insights. These cautions describe Oura’s own product and should not be generalized to every ring. See Oura’s medical-conditions guidance.

What a smart ring cannot establish

It is not a substitute for clinical judgment

Oura states that its ring is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent medical conditions or illnesses, and that Oura Advisor does not diagnose or give medication advice. Treat app scores as wellness information, not as a reason to start, stop or change treatment. Samsung likewise cautions that Samsung Health Records should not be the basis for medical decisions.

Do not rely on a ring for blood-glucose readings

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it has not authorized, cleared or approved any smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own. It warns consumers not to use rings making that claim because inaccurate readings could lead to medication errors. This is different from an app displaying information from an authorized finger-prick meter or continuous glucose monitor. Read the FDA safety communication.

What to check before connecting health records

If you are considering a records feature, check the service rather than assuming the ring includes it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether provider connections are supported in your country and by your healthcare provider.
  • Which record categories the app imports and whether it identifies the source provider.
  • Whether your ring generation, phone operating system and membership qualify.
  • Which measurements and app-generated wellness summaries are available on your device.
  • Whether you can choose records for personalization, export them, disconnect providers and delete imported data.
  • How the app explains the limits of its wellness insights and the roles of any record-connection or identity-verification services.

For Oura, the company says EHR import is optional and requires consent to connect a provider; users can choose providers and records, review or download imported records, disconnect providers or permanently delete the imported data. Oura describes Flexpa as the retrieval gateway and CLEAR as the identity-verification service. Review the privacy notices for Oura, your provider and any connecting services before opting in.
