Markdown bold makes text visually prominent; it does not, by itself, give an instruction more authority or make an AI agent more likely to obey it. In CommonMark, **text** and __text__ mark strong emphasis, which is rendered as an HTML <strong> element. Whether an agent sees the file—and how it handles its contents—depends on that agent’s tool and configuration.

What does bold mean in Markdown?

CommonMark section 6.4 specifies that text wrapped in two asterisks or two underscores is wrapped in an HTML <strong> tag. In a rendered document, that is commonly displayed as bold. The markup describes emphasis; it does not define a special instruction level.

For example, **Run the formatter before committing.** marks the sentence as strongly emphasized. The CommonMark tutorial also shows __Bold__ as an alternative. A backslash before a marker can prevent it from being interpreted as emphasis. See the CommonMark specification, section 6.4 and the CommonMark emphasis tutorial.

Does bold make an agent follow an instruction more strongly?

There is no basis in these sources for claiming that bold creates higher priority, changes an instruction hierarchy, or reliably improves compliance. CommonMark defines how the markup is represented. Codex documentation describes how applicable AGENTS.md files are loaded. Neither establishes a behavioral effect from bold formatting.

So “bold gets followed more” should be treated as an unverified hypothesis, not a dependable technique. Establishing such an effect would require controlled evidence for the particular agent, model, version, and setup.

How Codex handles AGENTS.md

OpenAI describes AGENTS.md files as a way for humans to give an agent instructions or tips for working within a container. Codex documentation also describes how applicable root and ancestor instruction files are included with its developer message. That explains a documented loading path—not a special power for bold text. See the Codex AGENTS.md documentation.

Codex’s base instructions also say, “Never mix monospace and bold markers; choose one based on whether it’s a keyword (**) or inline code/path.” This is a style convention in that document: bold for a keyword, monospace for literal code or paths. It does not show that bold changes agent behavior.

Should you bold important instructions?

You can use bold as a readability cue, but make the instruction explicit and actionable in ordinary text. For example, “Run the formatter before committing” tells the agent what action to take and when. Bolding that sentence may help a human scan the file; the available documentation does not support promising that it will improve compliance.

  • Use bold sparingly to make key wording easier to spot.
  • State the action, scope, and relevant condition directly.
  • Use code formatting for literal commands, paths, and code rather than combining it with bold.
  • Do not rely on typography to resolve conflicts or set instruction priority.

Why the agent harness matters

Instruction files are harness-specific. Tools can differ in recognized filenames and locations, whether files load automatically or need configuration, Markdown parsing or rendering behavior, and documented precedence rules. Microsoft’s VS Code custom instructions documentation lists AGENTS.md as the recommended project-instruction format for OpenAI Codex, while other harnesses may have different formats and loading rules.

Before relying on an instruction file, check the selected agent’s documentation for the filename and location it recognizes, how it loads the file, and any stated precedence rules. Do not assume that a Markdown convention or file-loading behavior transfers unchanged between tools.
