Immersive headphone sound is not determined by driver size or technology alone. It comes from how the recording is mixed, how the headphones reproduce its frequencies, how they fit, and whether spatial processing adds cues that make sounds seem outside your head or around you.
What “immersive” means in headphones
Soundstage is the apparent space occupied by sounds: where they seem to be, how far apart they are, and whether they seem close, distant, or outside your head. It is a perception, not a physical room inside the headphones. Ordinary stereo headphone playback can place much of the image between or inside the ears. Spatial rendering can add cues that make a scene seem in front of you or spread around you.
Those cues depend on the recording and playback mode as well as the headphones. A stereo track played without spatial processing is a different experience from a game or movie rendered for virtual surround or binaural listening. Compare the same content in the same mode if you want to judge the headphones rather than a change in processing.
How drivers contribute—and what they cannot tell you
A driver converts an electrical signal into sound. Its implementation affects measurable and audible reproduction, but a driver type or diameter does not, by itself, tell you how immersive a headphone will sound. Dynamic, planar magnetic, electrostatic, and other driver designs are not shortcuts to a wider soundstage.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
The spatial impression also depends on the audio’s channel information, the headphone’s frequency response, the way sound interacts with your ears, and any spatial-rendering process. Treat driver specifications as one part of a headphone’s design, not as a soundstage rating.
Why tuning matters—and why “flat” is not always the goal
Frequency response describes how strongly a headphone reproduces different frequencies. A response that emphasizes or reduces parts of the bass, midrange, or treble changes timbre and can affect spectral cues used in spatial rendering. Equalization can adjust that balance, but there is no evidence here that a particular bass or treble boost universally creates a wider soundstage.

- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
There are also different targets. Meta’s 2020 publication distinguishes accurate presentation of virtual spatial audio—which can benefit from a flatter headphone response—from stereo-music listening, where earlier research associated listener preference with a response resembling loudspeakers in a room. Accuracy for spatial content and preference for stereo music are not the same objective. Meta’s headphone guidance discusses compensation for headphone coloration in HRTF reproduction.

Listeners do not all prefer the same tonal balance. In a 2022 white paper, Sonarworks reports that its algorithm could find a target preferred over a headphone’s original sound for 78% of users in its research, drawing on its reported dataset of 147,000 individuals and more than 2.4 million A/B comparisons. These are vendor-reported findings, not an independent estimate of all headphone listeners, and they do not establish that any one EQ profile will make every headphone more immersive. Personalization may suit some listeners; it is not a universal soundstage fix.

How spatial audio creates a sense of space
When a sound comes from a particular direction, it reaches each ear with direction-dependent timing and level differences, as well as spectral changes shaped partly by the outer ear. A head-related transfer function (HRTF) describes these effects for sounds arriving from different directions. Spatial-audio systems use HRTFs and related cues to simulate where a source is located. With head tracking, the rendered scene can respond as you move your head.
Room reflections and movement can also influence whether a sound seems externalized—that is, outside the head rather than fixed between the ears. Microsoft Research explains how rendering stereo loudspeakers as though they were in front of a listener can move the apparent image outward. The Microsoft Research overview of spatial audio describes HRTFs in terms of source direction, distance, and frequency.

Processing is not guaranteed to improve every recording or listener’s experience. An Acoustical Society of America article reports a subjective evaluation involving 28 participants aged 18–29: one tested approach externalized sounds, while another traded stereo width against sound quality and comfort. The results depended strongly on the music, so this small, specific evaluation does not establish a universal ranking of spatial-processing modes. See the Acoustical Society of America article for its account of the evaluation.

| Design | Typical trade-offs | Often suits |
|---|---|---|
| Open-back | Less isolation and sound leakage; generally intended for listening in quieter spaces. | Quiet rooms where leakage is acceptable. |
| Closed-back | Generally more isolation and bass; may bring heat, weight, or internal-resonance trade-offs. | Settings where blocking outside sound matters more, provided the fit remains comfortable. |
These are general design tendencies, not guarantees for every model. Meta’s Horizon OS listening-device guidance describes the isolation, bass, leakage, and comfort considerations.
How to compare headphones for immersion
Use the factors below rather than relying on a single specification. Keep the recording, playback level, and playback mode consistent during comparisons.
Quick Recap
- Spatial rendering: Compare plain stereo with any virtual-surround, binaural, or head-tracked mode you actually plan to use. Processing changes the spatial cues reaching your ears.
- Tonal balance: Listen across bass, midrange, and treble, and check whether EQ is available if you want to adjust response. Preference varies with both listener and content.
- Fit and comfort: Consider seal, pressure, heat, and weight, especially for long sessions. A headphone you cannot comfortably wear is a poor match regardless of its technical capabilities.
- Environment: Account for room noise and sound leakage. Isolation may be more important in a noisy setting; open-back leakage can rule out shared or quiet spaces.
- Content: Test with the music, games, or films you care about. Spatial effects can be content-dependent, and stereo music is not equivalent to material designed for spatial rendering.
