Antarctica’s subglacial environment is difficult to study because thick ice hides lakes, waterways and the bed beneath them, while the continent’s remoteness makes direct access demanding. Radar, satellite observations and seismic surveys let scientists map much of this hidden world indirectly. To collect water or sediment, however, they must drill to a precise target, avoid contaminating it and interpret samples without confusing introduced material for native evidence.

What lies beneath the ice—and why is it hard to observe?

Subglacial environments occupy the boundary beneath the Antarctic ice sheet and, in some places, extend into water-filled features below the bed. They include lakes as well as rivers and streams, sometimes connected through changing drainage systems. The scale and variety of these systems mean there is no single representative site or one instrument that can answer every question.

NASA’s Sea Level Change Portal reported an average Antarctic ice-sheet thickness of 2.2 kilometers (1.3 miles) in a 2017 account of basal-water research. That figure belongs to that publication context, not a new measurement. NASA’s account also reported an estimate of approximately 65 gigatons of basal meltwater per year, attributing melt to insulation, pressure and geothermal heat.

The continent’s scale and remoteness make broad, repeated ground campaigns difficult to stage. Airborne and surface surveys can extend observations over wide areas, but reaching a specific site for direct measurements requires specialized field operations.

How do scientists study places they cannot see?

Researchers use radar, radio-echo sounding, satellite observations and seismic surveys to investigate the ice-bed interface and features beneath it. These tools detect signals associated with lake-like reflectors, surface changes linked to water movement, and subsurface structure. Their reach is a major advantage: scientists can map and monitor areas where routine direct observation is impossible.

But mapping is not the same as sampling. Geophysical instruments provide indirect evidence whose interpretation depends on observation quality and coverage. A borehole can yield water, sediment or in-situ measurements from one target, but it cannot provide the broad coverage of remote sensing. Neither approach alone answers every question.

Approach What it can establish Main constraint
Airborne and surface radar, radio-echo sounding, and satellite observations Broad patterns and signals associated with lakes, water movement and ice-bed features Evidence is indirect and depends on the quality and coverage of observations
Seismic surveys Information about subsurface structure Interpretation remains indirect
Drilling and direct sampling Measurements or samples from a particular site, including water or sediment Requires a borehole to reach the target while limiting contamination and disturbance

Why is drilling to a subglacial target difficult?

A lake or water cavity is a specific target beneath ice whose thickness and bed geometry must be accounted for. A borehole must not merely penetrate ice: it must reach the intended feature and, where necessary, connect to it in a way that enables measurement or sampling.

Lake Ellsworth: a case where access failed

During the 2012–13 Lake Ellsworth attempt, the target lay about 3,000 meters beneath the surface. After about 40 hours of drilling, the main borehole had not linked with a subsurface water cavity. Without that connection, the team did not have enough water to continue drilling down to the lake, and the field attempt was halted on 25 December 2012. The peer-reviewed 2014 assessment treated the work as a blueprint for deep access while concluding that future work required substantial technological and methodological advances.

Successful sampling is possible, but site-specific

In 2023, the U.S. National Science Foundation reported that the SALSA project had recovered the first layered sediments from beneath the modern Antarctic ice sheet. Those sediments can help researchers investigate ice-sheet history and past conditions. The achievement demonstrates that direct sampling can succeed at a particular target; it does not mean that all subglacial lakes are accessible or fully characterized.

Why must researchers guard against contamination?

Drilling equipment, fluids and water can introduce microbes, chemicals or particles, or otherwise alter the site. A sample is scientifically useful only if researchers can distinguish material native to the target from anything introduced during access and handling. Contamination can obscure evidence about native biology or chemistry, while disturbance can change the environment under study.

The National Research Council’s 2007 report, chapter 4, identifies the core challenge: “A key issue in the exploration of subglacial aquatic environments is how to recover data and samples that are free of artifacts or contamination without irreversibly altering the environment under study.” It recommends remote characterization and minimum contamination standards.

NSF’s overview describes ultraviolet radiation, water filtration and hydrogen peroxide among the contamination controls used for drilling and sampling at Whillans and Mercer. These are examples from particular projects, not a universal protocol for every site: suitable controls depend on the target and the access system.

How many subglacial lakes are there?

Published lake counts reflect different dates and contexts, so they should not be combined into a single current census. The National Research Council’s 2007 report recorded more than 145 lakes identified using airborne and surface radar. A later fifth-edition NSF overview, whose publication year is not established here, described approximately 675 lakes identified over preceding decades. The figures document how the mapped inventory has grown; they are not a standardized, up-to-date total.

Which method suits which research question?

The study design depends on what scientists need to learn. Mapping drainage or tracking water movement calls for observations over wider areas; investigating microbes or water chemistry requires clean access to a specific site; recovering lake-floor sediment addresses questions about environmental and ice-sheet history. Target depth, geometry, instrument coverage and the risk of contamination or disturbance all shape the choice. No method is universally best.
