A fusion reactor can produce more fusion power than the external power used to heat its plasma when the fuel is hot and dense enough, and stays confined long enough, for fusion reactions to outpace energy losses. But that does not mean the whole facility produces more electricity than it uses. That distinction depends on what energy is being counted.

What does “more energy than it consumes” mean?

In magnetic-confinement fusion, the commonly cited gain factor Q compares fusion power with the external heating power injected to sustain the plasma. ITER defines it as fusion power divided by external plasma-heating power. At Q = 1, the fusion power equals that heating input; above 1, fusion power is greater than the external heating power. This is plasma breakeven, not a measure of the electricity balance of the entire facility. (ITER’s explanation of fusion gain; ITER FAQ)

A power plant must meet a broader test: after turning fusion heat into electricity, it must generate more electricity than all of its systems consume. That accounting includes the equipment needed for heating and confinement as well as other plant loads. ITER distinguishes this engineering breakeven from plasma breakeven and says ITER will not convert its heating power into electricity. (ITER project FAQ)

What conditions increase fusion gain?

Fusion gain rises when reactions release energy faster than the plasma loses it, reducing the amount of outside heating needed to maintain the plasma. Three linked conditions matter: temperature, density and confinement time. Together, they are commonly discussed through the Lawson criterion.

  • Notes: Glue is required (Not Included) during the assembly process. You will also need to provide your own 5V USB charging adapter, or you can power it by connecting to a power bank or computer.
  • Temperature: The fuel nuclei need enough energy to overcome their electrostatic repulsion and fuse. Raising plasma temperature increases the likelihood of reactions.
  • Density: More fuel nuclei in a given volume create more opportunities for collisions and fusion.
  • Confinement time: The hot fuel must remain confined long enough for reactions to occur before it cools or escapes. ITER’s glossary describes the need to hold the fuel at temperature for a minimum time to produce more fusion energy than was invested in heating. (ITER glossary)

These conditions work together: achieving a high temperature alone is not enough if the fuel is too sparse or loses its heat too quickly. A numerical Lawson threshold depends on the fuel and confinement approach, so there is no single figure that applies to every fusion system.

How fusion can help heat its own plasma

In deuterium-tritium fusion, the reaction produces a helium nucleus, also called an alpha particle, and a neutron. The charged alpha particle can transfer energy back to the plasma, helping heat the fuel and sustain further reactions. When fusion products provide substantial self-heating, the plasma is described as a burning plasma. (ITER: fusion physics)

Most of the reaction’s energy is carried by neutrons. Because neutrons are uncharged, magnetic fields do not confine them; they escape the plasma and deposit energy in surrounding structures. In a future power plant, a blanket would capture that heat for conversion into electricity. That heat recovery is a plant-engineering step, separate from the plasma’s Q value. (ITER: blanket)

Breakeven, ignition and net-electric breakeven

Term What it means What it does not establish
Fusion gain (Q) Fusion power divided by external power used to heat the plasma, under ITER’s definition. (ITER FAQ) Whether the whole facility produces more electricity than it consumes.
Plasma breakeven Q = 1: fusion power equals external plasma-heating power. (ITER FAQ) Whether the facility’s total electrical input is offset.
Ignition ITER’s glossary describes ignition as the limiting case Q = infinity, when external heating is no longer needed to sustain the plasma. (ITER glossary) Whether the plant can convert heat to electricity and export a net surplus.
Engineering or net-electric breakeven The plant generates more electricity than all its systems consume, accounting for conversion and auxiliary loads. (ITER project FAQ) It is not established by a plasma Q value alone.

The term “breakeven” needs its boundary stated. A claim about plasma heating and a claim about whole-plant electricity can both use the word while describing very different balances.

What ITER’s and NIF’s reported numbers show

ITER’s stated programmatic goal is Q ≥ 10: 500 MW of fusion thermal power from 50 MW of external heating power. This is a goal, not a reported operating result, and it compares fusion heat with plasma-heating input rather than net electricity. ITER says it will not convert the heating power it produces into electricity. (ITER FAQ; ITER project FAQ)

For a different kind of experiment, ITER’s FAQ reports that in late 2022 the US National Ignition Facility delivered 2.05 MJ of laser energy to a target that produced 3.15 MJ of fusion energy. The ratio is about 1.5 at the target accounting boundary. It does not show that the entire laser facility, or an electricity-generating power plant, used less electricity than it produced. Aoshima Back to The Future Part II: Time Machine 1:24 Scale Model Kit
  • An import from Aoshima
  • From the classic film series
  • Gull wing doors are functional and can be opened and closed even after assembly
  • Includes a same-scale Hoverboard and detail-up parts
  • Finished model measures approximately 184mm in length

These figures should not be compared as though they measure the same system. ITER’s goal compares fusion thermal power with plasma-heating power in a magnetic-confinement experiment; the NIF example compares target-level fusion yield with laser energy delivered to that target.

What a fusion power plant still has to solve

A high plasma gain is one important physics result, not a complete power-generation system. A plant would need to turn that result into reliable net electricity and sustain the supporting systems and fuel cycle.

  • Capture and convert heat: A blanket must absorb neutron energy, transfer heat to a working fluid and support a steam cycle or another electricity-conversion system. (ITER: blanket)
  • Cover the full electrical load: Gross electricity must exceed the electricity used across the plant, not just the power supplied to heat the plasma. (ITER project FAQ)
  • Withstand neutron exposure and heat: Reactor-facing materials must survive demanding conditions over sustained operation; ITER notes that its materials work must be supplemented by further materials-science research. (ITER: blanket)
  • Close the tritium fuel cycle: A future plant is expected to breed tritium from lithium and recover it for reuse. ITER identifies tritium self-sustainment as a concept it will test. (ITER: tritium breeding; ITER glossary)
  • Operate reliably over time: Commercial operation requires repeatable or sustained performance alongside fuel handling, heat removal and component lifetime. ITER describes long-duration, reactor-like systems as substantial engineering work. (ITER: blanket)

The available official figures here establish ITER’s stated research goal and ITER’s account of a dated NIF target-level result; they do not establish a commercial fusion plant’s efficiency, cost or net-electric performance.
