The three-word phrase was “smartest man in baseball.” Catherine Varitek used it sarcastically in a reported reply about the Red Sox’s handling of her husband, former catcher Jason Varitek. The exchange was covered amid Boston’s April 2026 coaching overhaul—not a postseason elimination.
What was Catherine Varitek’s three-word reaction?
MassLive, in a report republished by Yahoo Sports, reproduced Catherine Varitek’s reply to a fan urging Jason to return: “They have the ‘smartest man in baseball’ running the show… they’ll be OK without Jason, that’s what they wanted. It’s what’s best for the team.” The phrase singled out as the three-word reaction is “smartest man in baseball.” Read the MassLive report republished by Yahoo Sports.

Why was Jason Varitek’s role in the news?
Boston dismissed manager Alex Cora and several coaches in an early-season overhaul and reassigned Varitek from his on-field coaching role. Boston.com reported on April 26, 2026, that his future role remained unclear. Breslow said the organization was still discussing Varitek’s status and that the conversations were best handled privately. Boston.com’s April 26 report on Varitek’s role.
Boston.com also reported that Catherine had posted a farewell message thanking Red Sox fans for their support of her husband before her later reply to the fan. The remark therefore landed amid uncertainty about Varitek’s place in the reworked coaching staff.

Was this after a postseason elimination?
The contemporaneous reports place the story in an in-season coaching shakeup in April 2026, not after Boston’s postseason elimination. FanGraphs described the overhaul as a response to the team’s poor start and reported the Red Sox were 10–17 on April 27, 2026; that is a dated snapshot, not a current record.
