For Kratos, a Ukrainian Army drone pilot identified in the available interview only by his call sign, the job means shifting between reconnaissance, bomber-drone and anti-drone missions—and spending most of his time near the front underground. He describes a role that can help protect soldiers on the ground, but also brings exhaustion and the constant risk of being spotted or hit. His account is a personal interview, not a survey of Ukraine’s armed forces.
Who is Kratos, and how did he become a drone pilot?
In an interview excerpt published by Sözalt on 2 October 2026, Kratos says he studied computer science and had recently secured an internship at a game company when Russia launched its full-scale invasion. He says he joined the army on the day the invasion began. The available account does not disclose his legal name.
He describes moving through three jobs: flying reconnaissance drones, piloting bomber drones, and then working against enemy drones. The excerpt places him in the Aquila regiment under the 3rd Army Corps. It describes the regiment as countering threats from small FPV drones to long-range kamikaze drones, using short-range anti-aircraft guns, shoulder-launched rockets and drones. Kratos’s small team focuses on drone-to-drone combat above the front line.

At a high level, Kratos’s account describes a team trying to intercept aerial threats and protect troops below. The secondary reproduction of the interview, also dated 2 October 2026, says team members divide work that includes assembling and arming drones, piloting, navigation and keeping records. Kratos says members train to cover one another’s roles.
That division matters in his telling: the work is not simply one person flying a drone. It involves preparation, coordination and supporting the rest of the team. The account does not identify specific drone models or provide enough detail to infer operational procedures.
How far behind the front do drones reach?
Kratos says drones can reach about 30 kilometres behind the front line. That is his description of the threat he faces, not a universal boundary for drone range or a measure applying to every unit and location in Ukraine. Its personal implication is clear: in his experience, danger is not confined to the immediate frontline.

How do Ukrainian drone pilots live near the front?
Kratos estimates that personnel spend 90 per cent of their time underground in bunkers. He describes continuous work and the danger of being spotted when outside. He likens the conditions to camping, while stressing that wartime danger gives that comparison a very different meaning. The estimate reflects his account, not an independently measured statistic for Ukrainian forces.

He says occasional respite in Kyiv does not erase awareness of strikes. The interview presents a life shaped by vigilance as well as the practical routines of the job; time away from the front does not necessarily mean feeling removed from the war.

What do his mission and performance figures mean?
The secondary reproduction attributes several figures and recollections to Kratos. They should be read as claims from his interview, not independently audited results or unit-wide statistics.
| Claim in the interview account | What it describes |
|---|---|
| 932 enemy drones | Kratos’s reported personal takedown count; the definition and record are not independently confirmed in the available material. |
| 180 targets over 20 days | A reported team total during a front-line trip; the account does not independently verify the count or define “targets.” |
| Up to 30 sorties a day | The reported maximum during that account; it is not stated as a daily average. |
Among the missions described, Kratos recalls supporting troops retaking a village and intercepting a drone that threatened a wounded soldier. Those examples show the protective purpose he assigns to anti-drone work, while the available material does not independently confirm the specific mission outcomes.

How has the work changed, according to Kratos?
Kratos contrasts the early days of the war with the present as two different worlds. In the interview account, he remembers an earlier period dominated more by artillery and describes a later environment in which drone threats are pervasive. This is his perspective on a changing battlefield, not a complete history of how warfare in Ukraine has evolved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHis account holds tactical purpose and personal cost together: the work can help ground troops, but it also means sustained danger, exhaustion, injury and death. Kratos’s reflections suggest how a role that depends on technology remains inseparable from the vulnerability of the people operating it.
