Current Xbox Wireless Controllers also include Bluetooth, so the same controller can use Xbox Wireless with an Xbox console or Microsoft’s Windows adapter, and Bluetooth with supported PCs, phones and tablets. Which method you should use depends on the host device, controller model and features you need.
What Xbox Wireless means
Xbox Wireless is Microsoft’s native wireless link for Xbox controllers and other compatible accessories. On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, it is the controller’s normal wireless connection. A current Xbox Wireless Controller can also pair with supported Windows PCs, Android devices and iOS devices, although the available functions depend on the device and its operating-system version.
Microsoft describes its current controller as including “XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth® technology for wireless gaming on console, PC, mobile phones and tablets.” These are two separate radio connection methods built into the controller, not two names for the same protocol.
How each connection works
Xbox consoles
Pair the controller directly with an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One over Xbox Wireless. The console and controller use Microsoft’s dedicated wireless link, so no Bluetooth setting or USB accessory is required on the console.

Windows PC over Bluetooth
If your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC has Bluetooth and the controller model supports it, pair the controller through Windows Bluetooth settings. Microsoft lists Bluetooth as the wireless PC path for these operating systems. This is independent of Xbox Wireless: a PC using Bluetooth is not using the Xbox Wireless protocol.
Windows PC over Xbox Wireless
To use Xbox Wireless on a Windows PC, connect Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port, then pair the controller with the adapter. The adapter is intended for Xbox Wireless Controllers on compatible Windows PCs and tablets and supports up to eight controllers at once. Microsoft’s current Store listing marks the adapter Out of stock, so availability can change.

Wired USB connection
A compatible USB-C cable can connect the controller to an Xbox console or Windows PC when wireless pairing is unavailable or undesirable. Microsoft notes that a compatible cable may be required for some Windows features. A wired connection also avoids wireless-pairing and battery concerns.
Xbox Wireless versus Bluetooth
| Connection method | Typical hosts | Extra hardware | Controller capacity | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless | Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One; Windows PCs or tablets with Microsoft’s adapter | None on Xbox; Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows on a PC without built-in Xbox Wireless | Adapter supports up to eight controllers | Accessory and feature support depends on the controller and host |
| Bluetooth | Compatible Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS and Android devices | Bluetooth hardware in the host device | Not stated on Microsoft’s consulted product pages | Not every Xbox accessory feature is available over Bluetooth |
| USB-C cable | Compatible Xbox consoles and Windows PCs | Compatible USB-C cable | One wired controller per cable connection | Microsoft says a cable may be required for some Windows features |
Xbox Wireless is generally the console-focused choice, while Bluetooth is the broadly supported option for mobile devices and many Windows systems. Do not assume that a feature available over Xbox Wireless will also work over Bluetooth; check the controller and host documentation for the specific feature.

Do you need the Xbox Wireless Adapter for PC?
No, not always. You need the adapter when you specifically want Xbox Wireless on a Windows PC that does not have another built-in Xbox Wireless connection. You can use Bluetooth instead if the PC has compatible Bluetooth hardware and your controller supports it. You can also connect by USB-C.
Choose Bluetooth when
- Your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC already has compatible Bluetooth.
- You only need basic wireless controller connectivity and your required features work over Bluetooth.
- You do not want to purchase or locate an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Choose the adapter when
- You want the controller connected through Xbox Wireless rather than Bluetooth.
- Your PC lacks Bluetooth or its Bluetooth implementation is incompatible with the controller.
- You need to connect multiple controllers; Microsoft’s adapter listing specifies support for up to eight at once.
Use USB-C when
- You need a dependable wired fallback.
- Wireless pairing is failing or unavailable.
- You need a Windows feature that requires a compatible cable.
What devices can a current Xbox Wireless Controller use?
Microsoft lists support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS and Android. The controller can pair with and switch among supported devices, but the exact switching behavior and available functions vary by controller model, host hardware and operating-system version. Before buying, confirm that the model you have or plan to buy supports the target device and the connection method you intend to use.

Power and battery life
Microsoft specifies up to 40 hours of battery life for the current Xbox Wireless Controller when using AA batteries. This is a manufacturer rating, not a guaranteed runtime: Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with headset use, additional accessories, usage patterns and other factors.
Keep spare AA batteries available, or use a compatible rechargeable battery pack if you prefer rechargeable power. A USB-C cable can provide the wired fallback described above.

What Microsoft does—and does not—specify
Microsoft’s current product pages establish the supported connection types, host platforms, USB 2.0/3.0 requirement for the adapter, support for up to eight controllers through that adapter, and the qualified “up to 40 hours” AA-battery rating. The consulted pages do not publish a current exact wireless range, latency measurement or interference statistic. Treat claims about a specific range or response-time advantage as unverified unless they come with a separate, clearly identified measurement.
Quick Recap
A practical setup decision
- Identify the host. For Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, use Xbox Wireless. For Windows, iOS or Android, check the controller and operating-system compatibility.
- Check the PC’s radios. On Windows, use Bluetooth if compatible Bluetooth hardware is present and the required features are supported.
- Decide whether Xbox Wireless is necessary. If yes, obtain Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows when available; Microsoft’s Store listing currently shows it as out of stock.
- Keep a wired option. Use a compatible USB-C cable for pairing problems, unsupported wireless features or situations where you do not want to use batteries.
- Plan for power. The controller uses AA batteries and is rated for up to 40 hours under Microsoft’s qualified conditions; accessories and usage can reduce that figure.
