x402 is an open protocol that uses HTTP’s 402 Payment Required response to negotiate payment for a web resource, such as an API endpoint. A server states the payment terms it accepts, a client sends a matching payment payload, and the implementation verifies and settles payment before providing the resource. HTTP carries the challenge and response; it does not itself move funds.

How does the x402 payment flow work?

A client and server use ordinary HTTP requests and responses to exchange the information needed to pay for a resource. The exact payload and payment mechanics depend on the scheme, network, and implementation.

  1. Request the resource. The client sends an HTTP request to the resource server, such as an API request.
  2. Receive payment terms. If the client does not already know the payment details, the server can return HTTP 402 with the requirements it accepts.
  3. Choose an option and construct a payload. The client selects an offered requirement and prepares a payment payload for its scheme and network.
  4. Retry with payment information. The client sends the request again with the payment payload.
  5. Verify, settle, and fulfill. The server checks the payment itself or delegates the check to a facilitator. The implementation’s verification and settlement sequence determines when the resource is delivered.

A client that already knows the resource’s payment details may skip the discovery exchange and send a payment payload with its request. The x402 project describes the typical flow in its repository and protocol specification.

What does “HTTP-native” mean—and what does it not mean?

“HTTP-native” means payment terms and payment responses fit into web requests and responses. It does not mean that HTTP transfers money, that every implementation avoids blockchain dependencies, or that all x402 payments settle on the same network. The protocol is designed to support extensible schemes and networks; compatibility depends on what a particular client and server implement.

What is an x402 facilitator?

A facilitator provides payment verification and settlement operations, allowing a resource server to delegate blockchain-specific work. It is an architectural role, not necessarily a third-party service: a team can use a managed facilitator, run a separate one, or self-facilitate. The x402 v2 specification describes facilitator verification and settlement interfaces; Solana’s facilitator guide also documents a /supported endpoint for capability discovery.

Delegating these operations changes who runs the payment infrastructure, but does not by itself establish how secure or suitable a deployment is. When evaluating one, check its protocol versions, supported schemes and networks, signer support, operator and trust model, and whether it verifies payment before releasing the resource. Also examine what happens when settlement fails and how the implementation binds the payment to the resource being delivered.

What changed in x402 v2?

Coinbase announced x402 on May 6, 2025, describing it as an open standard for embedding stablecoin payments into web interactions. Its whitepaper, published the same day under Coinbase Developer Platform / x402, lists Erik Reppel, Ronnie Caspers, Kevin Leffew, Danny Organ, Dan Kim, and Nemil Dalal as authors. The launch announcement is available from Coinbase Developer Platform.

The live specification records version 2.0 on December 9, 2025. Its listed changes include CAIP-2 network identifiers, a restructured payment payload and requirements, separation of ResourceInfo, and support for extensions. The specification says the core protocol is transport-agnostic, while facilitator APIs are currently standardized as HTTP endpoints. Check the current x402 v2 specification when implementing or assessing a particular integration.

What should developers check before integrating x402?

The protocol defines a common exchange, but it does not make every implementation interchangeable. Verify the details that affect compatibility and whether a payment is actually authorized before a resource is released.

  • Compatibility: Confirm that the client and server support the same protocol version, scheme, network, asset, and signer requirements.
  • Facilitator operation: Identify who operates the facilitator, what it does, and which party controls relevant keys or signing operations.
  • Fulfillment timing: Establish whether the server delivers content after verification, after settlement, or at another point in the implementation’s sequence.
  • Failure behavior: Test invalid, stale, replayed, and unsuccessful payment attempts, including what response the client receives and whether the resource remains withheld.
  • Payment-to-resource binding: Check how the server ensures the verified payment authorizes the specific resource requested.
  • Operational requirements: Confirm wallet, network, fee, credential, and service requirements for the chosen network and facilitator. “HTTP-native” does not guarantee their absence.

For example, Coinbase documents a versioned facilitator verification endpoint with a specific request format in its Verify payment API reference. Its interface is an implementation detail, not a universal requirement for every x402 deployment.

What are x402’s security considerations?

A 2026 arXiv preprint, “When HTTP 402 Meets the Blockchain: Risks on Emerging x402 Payments”, examines facilitator-mediated deployments and reports potential problems involving authorization correctness and execution safety. The study discusses replay and validity checks, whether a facilitator reports valid settlement, and whether a submitted transaction matches the authorized payment. These are reported risks in the deployments the authors evaluated, not proof that every x402 integration has those defects.

For a specific implementation, review its validation and settlement checks, replay protections, settlement reporting, and handling of short payment-validity windows. Test these paths against the implementation’s own documentation rather than assuming that protocol compatibility alone provides the necessary safeguards.
