WordPress hosting is the service and server environment that keeps a WordPress website online. WordPress is the software; the hosting provider supplies the server where it runs. You can use general-purpose hosting that meets WordPress’s requirements, or choose a WordPress-focused service that may include setup and maintenance features.
What WordPress hosting includes
A host is the company that provides the service. A server is the computer that stores and runs your website. When someone visits your site, the server sends the requested pages to their browser. WordPress hosting is the service and server environment behind that process. WordPress Developer Resources explains the basic requirements for installing WordPress.
WordPress itself is a content management system (CMS): software for creating and managing pages, posts, media, and other site content. Hosting does not replace WordPress, and buying hosting does not necessarily mean WordPress is already installed.
Do you need WordPress-specific hosting?
No. General-purpose hosting can run different web applications, including WordPress, as long as the server meets WordPress’s current technical requirements. WordPress-specific hosting is configured for WordPress or may arrive with WordPress installed. Depending on the provider and plan, it can also include services such as backups, updates, staging, or developer tools. These features are not guaranteed by the label alone.

WordPress.org’s documentation says: “If you are new to WordPress, it may be a good idea to have your site hosted by a provider with experience in WordPress hosting.” That advice is useful for beginners, but it is not a guarantee that every WordPress-focused service provides the same setup, support, or maintenance.
Technical requirements to check
WordPress.org’s current requirements page, accessed in 2026, recommends the following environment:
- PHP 8.3 or greater.
- MariaDB 10.11 or greater, or MySQL 8.0 or greater.
- HTTPS support.
- Apache or Nginx as recommended web-server software.
There is a separate, more current production recommendation in the WordPress Hosting Handbook: it recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production environments. That is hosting-team guidance, while PHP 8.3 or greater is the baseline on WordPress.org’s requirements page; they are distinct recommendations, not identical statements. The handbook also advises hosts to test their full stack before changing the default PHP version. See the Hosting Handbook’s server-environment guidance.

These are technical starting points for hosts, not universal consumer plan requirements; actual memory needs depend on a site’s themes, plugins, and workload. Older PHP and database versions may be end-of-life and expose sites to security vulnerabilities, so check the live requirements rather than relying on an outdated checklist.

How to compare hosting options
Compare the details that affect your setup and ongoing work. A provider’s WordPress label alone does not tell you what a particular plan includes.
| What to check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Installation and setup | Is WordPress pre-installed, or will you install and configure it yourself? |
| Updates | Which updates, if any, does the provider handle? Check exactly what is covered. |
| Backups and recovery | Are backups included? How often are they made, how long are they retained, and can you restore the site yourself? |
| Staging and developer tools | Can you test changes on a staging copy before applying them to the live site? Which tools are included? |
| Compatibility | Does the server meet the current PHP, database, and HTTPS recommendations? |
| Support | What support is available, when can you reach it, and does it cover WordPress-specific issues? |
WordPress.org’s hosting directory describes providers and features, but it is not an independent performance ranking. The available information does not establish which provider is fastest, cheapest, or best for every site. Confirm current plan terms and compare providers using the same criteria.

Which setup makes sense for a beginner?
General-purpose hosting may suit you if you are comfortable installing WordPress and handling updates, backups, and recovery yourself. A WordPress-focused service may reduce setup or maintenance work when its plan explicitly includes the features you need. Neither type is automatically faster, safer, or better: the practical difference is the server environment and the specific work the provider agrees to handle.
