Wi-Fi 8 is the industry name for IEEE P802.11bn, a wireless standard in development that aims to make connections more reliable and consistent—not simply faster. As of October 7, 2026, it remains a draft project, so its final specifications and real-world performance are not settled. If you need a network upgrade now, compare Wi-Fi 7 routers or mesh systems for your home rather than buying on a Wi-Fi 8 label. Wi-Fi 7 is already a published standard; keeping a working router may be the most cost-saving choice if it meets your needs.

What is Wi-Fi 8?

Wi-Fi 8 is the common industry name for IEEE P802.11bn, an amendment project titled “Ultra High Reliability.” The IEEE project timeline lists it as an active project with draft D2.0; it is not a finalized standard. The label describes a generation under development, not a guarantee that a particular router has final-standard features or has been certified to final criteria. See the IEEE project timeline.

Its central proposed shift is toward more dependable wireless service and consistency in challenging environments, rather than a straightforward increase in peak throughput. MediaTek and Qualcomm describe the technology’s direction in their white papers, but these are industry perspectives about a draft, not independent demonstrations of consumer-router performance. The final standard, device implementations, radio conditions, network setup, and broadband service will all affect what users experience. MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 8 white paper and Qualcomm’s white paper explain the proposed direction.

Why might Wi-Fi 8 matter?

A more reliable connection could matter most when devices move between access points, many networks compete for airtime, or an interruption has a high cost. MediaTek names extended reality (XR), industrial automation, and e-health as potential application areas. Those are proposed use cases, not evidence that a household will see a specific improvement.

Wi-Fi 8 also cannot solve every cause of poor Wi-Fi. Router placement, walls, interference, client-device capability, wired backhaul, configuration, and the internet connection itself can each be the bottleneck. A newer generation label is not a substitute for identifying what is limiting your network.

What is Wi-Fi 8’s status and expected timing?

As of October 7, 2026, the IEEE Working Group timeline lists P802.11bn at draft D2.0. It shows a 77% draft-ballot snapshot associated with the September 2, 2026 milestone. That percentage describes a standards-process ballot snapshot—not reliability, product readiness, or consumer adoption. The IEEE page also lists future predicted milestones, which can change.

Product announcements need similar caution. A May 2026 Tom’s Hardware report on TP-Link’s roadmap described an Archer 8 router tentatively expected in October 2026, pending FCC approval, and other products planned for 2027. A roadmap is not proof of current retail stock, final specifications, final-standard certification, or price. Should you wait for Wi-Fi 8?

Wait if your current network works well and you have no pressing coverage, reliability, or capacity problem. That avoids paying for an upgrade before the standard and consumer implementations have settled. Consider buying now if your router is failing, your home has persistent dead zones, or your network cannot meet a specific need. In that case, assess current Wi-Fi 7 equipment against your layout and devices rather than buying based on a future standard’s promises.

The Wi-Fi 7 baseline is more concrete: IEEE identifies 802.11be-2024 as a published standard. Its description specifies at least one operating mode supporting maximum throughput of at least 30 Gbit/s at the MAC service access point. That is a standard-level capability, not a prediction of router speed or household internet speed. The description also specifies backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE 802.11 devices across the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. See the IEEE 802.11-2024 catalog and IEEE’s 802.11be description.

How to choose a cost-saving alternative now

There is no universally best or cheapest Wi-Fi 7 product: prices vary by region and date, and a model’s value depends on the problem you need to solve. Compare the following before buying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Coverage and layout: A single router may suit a compact home; a mesh system or multiple access points may suit a larger or more divided layout. Node placement matters.
  • Reliability and congestion: Look for independent testing in a home environment similar to yours. A peak-rate label alone does not tell you how well a product handles your walls, interference, or busy airtime.
  • Client compatibility: Newer router capabilities only help when client devices support them. A new router does not upgrade older phones, computers, or smart-home devices.
  • Wired connections: Check WAN and LAN port speeds, and whether you need wired backhaul or fast transfers within your local network.
  • Total cost versus need: Compare current local prices and include any extra nodes or cabling you need. If your existing router already provides adequate coverage and performance, keeping it costs less than replacing it.

A Wi-Fi 7 range extender can be relevant for a limited coverage gap, but it is not a universal fix. Depending on your home, a mesh system or access point may be a better fit. TechRadar’s September 2026 Wi-Fi 8 guidance discusses Wi-Fi 7 products, including the TP-Link BE10000 Wi-Fi 7 Range Extender RE653BE; that mention does not establish it as the right choice for every household.

What to remember before buying

  • Wi-Fi 8 means IEEE P802.11bn, a draft project whose final specifications are not settled.
  • Its stated distinguishing goal is greater reliability and consistency; actual consumer improvements have not been established by independent Wi-Fi 8 hardware testing.
  • Wi-Fi 7 is a published standard and a practical category to compare if you need an upgrade now.
  • Choose based on the network problem, home layout, client devices, wired needs, and current price—not the generation number alone.
