Wave Browser is a Chromium-based browser made by Eightpoint Technologies Ltd., which does business as Wavesor Software. Whether it is safe depends partly on how it reached your computer: Wave says its official releases are safe and reports current Windows and macOS AppEsteem certifications, while Malwarebytes classifies some instances as a potentially unwanted program and says it has received reports of installation without consent. Neither finding proves that every copy is malicious—or that every installation is trustworthy.
What is Wave Browser?
Wave is a web browser based on Chromium, the open-source browser project also used by other browsers. Its developer is Eightpoint Technologies Ltd., which identifies itself as doing business as Wavesor Software. Wave lists features such as Incognito Mode, customizable cookie and privacy controls, and ad and tracker blocking on Windows and macOS. Availability can vary by platform and release. Wave Browser’s distribution and company information and its security page describe these details.
Wave also includes an AI assistant. The available browser-specific privacy information does not establish what data that feature or the browser collects, shares, retains, or deletes, so those practices should not be inferred from a separate Wave AI privacy page.
Is Wave Browser a virus or malware?
There is no basis here to say that every Wave Browser installation is a virus. There is also a meaningful reason to investigate an installation you do not recognize. Wave Browser Support said in a September 11, 2023 response, “No, Wave Browser is not malware. Wave is consistently assessed by security experts and antivirus software and deemed safe.” That is the company’s position, not an independent conclusion. Wave Browser Support’s statement

Malwarebytes describes PUP.Optional.Wave as its detection name for Wave Browser “that qualifies as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).” Malwarebytes also says it has received reports that the browser was distributed without user consent. A PUP detection means the software meets that security vendor’s potentially unwanted program criteria; it does not establish that all official installations are malicious. Conversely, a vendor denial does not settle whether an unexpected copy or a particular installation route is safe. Malwarebytes’ detection explanation
Wave says it distributes the browser through official channels and does not authorize third-party bundling or distribution. Malwarebytes’ reports make installation route relevant, but the available information does not establish how often unauthorized distribution occurs. Wave’s distribution statement

What does AppEsteem certification tell you?
Wave reported that its Windows version 1.5.26.3 and macOS version 1.5.24.4 were active in AppEsteem’s directory on September 9, 2026. The company reported certification dates of August 25, 2026 for Windows and June 17, 2026 for macOS. These are version- and date-specific claims; check Wave’s certification information and AppEsteem’s directory for current status.
Certification is relevant evidence about the releases and status identified, but it does not establish that every copy came from an official source, guarantee every future version, or resolve the browser’s detailed data practices. Wave’s security page also describes browser controls, not a guarantee against all online threats.

What security and privacy features does Wave list?
- HTTPS support: Wave says it supports HTTPS connections, which encrypts traffic between a browser and a website when that site uses HTTPS.
- Incognito Mode: A private-browsing mode is listed. It should not be treated as a promise of anonymity or as proof that websites, networks, or services cannot observe activity.
- Cookie and privacy controls: Wave says users can customize these controls.
- Ad and tracker blocking: Wave lists these features for Windows and macOS. It cautions that feature availability varies and no browser can eliminate all tracking.
These are the controls Wave documents, not evidence that Wave is more secure than another browser or protects against every threat. Wave’s linked browser privacy policy did not provide substantive details in the material available for this article, leaving browser-specific collection, sharing, retention, and deletion practices unresolved. Wave’s security page describes the controls and their limits.
Should you keep Wave Browser?
If you installed it intentionally
Confirm that the version and download source match the official channel you intended to use. Review the browser’s settings and decide whether its available privacy controls meet your needs. The security evidence described above is not a substitute for reviewing the current release and its applicable privacy policy.

If Wave appeared unexpectedly
- Confirm what is installed. Check your installed-app list and browser settings to identify the application and version. Consider whether it arrived with another download or through a source you do not recognize.
- Take an alert seriously. If your security software flags Wave, do not assume the alert is false. Wave says some alerts may be false positives, but that is not independent confirmation. Malwarebytes documents a PUP.Optional.Wave detection and removal workflow; consult your security software’s guidance and use a trusted scanner if you are concerned. Malwarebytes’ detection and removal information
- Remove it if you do not want it. Use your operating system’s normal uninstall controls and follow any security-software instructions. The available information does not establish one cleanup procedure that resolves every case, and does not show that every installation leaves persistent components.
- Review other installed software. If Wave arrived unexpectedly, check for other unfamiliar applications or browser changes and investigate them separately.
For an unexpected Windows installation, Outbyte describes PC Repair as a utility that scans for PUAs and some known malware, while stating that it complements rather than replaces antivirus. It is an optional tool, not a required step or a guarantee of removal. Outbyte’s product information

In September 2026, Wave reported more than 25 million downloads and more than 1.7 billion searches served across Windows and macOS, based on its internal distribution records and aggregate. These figures are not independently verified, and they indicate reported usage—not safety. Wave also reported a SourceForge rating of 4.9 out of 5 from 52 reviews on September 2, 2026; ratings and review counts can change. Wave’s reported metrics
Separately, 4ocean’s partnership page, dated May 25, 2022, identifies Wave Browser as a certified cleanup partner and says a portion of Wave revenue supports cleanup crews, with a commitment to remove 300,000 pounds of trash by 2028. This environmental partnership does not determine whether a browser installation is safe. 4ocean’s partnership page
