WASIX is Wasmer’s extension of the WASI Preview 1 interface. It adds selected capabilities—such as threads, sockets, subprocesses, pipes, and terminal support—that can help POSIX-oriented applications run as WebAssembly modules. “POSIX” here means a useful subset of familiar APIs and behaviors, not complete POSIX compatibility: an application still needs compatible libraries and ABI imports, a runtime that implements them, and permission to use the required host resources.

What is WASIX?

WebAssembly programs use a system interface to request services from their host, such as access to files or other operating-system capabilities. WASI is one such interface. WASIX extends the older WASI Preview 1 ABI with additional system calls and libraries intended to make more practical applications feasible in WebAssembly.

Wasmer describes WASIX as adding non-invasive extensions to the existing WASI ABI. The WASIX maintainers describe it as a superset rather than a fork and state a long-term ABI backward-compatibility commitment. Those are project design goals and commitments, not proof that every runtime supports every extension or that WASIX is a formal, universal WASI standard. Wasmer’s WASIX documentation and the WASIX specification repository describe the project.

What does WASIX add to WASI Preview 1?

Wasmer and the WASIX project document extensions that address capabilities commonly used by system-oriented applications. The listed examples include:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Threads: multithreading and pthread-related support.
  • Networking: TCP and UDP sockets, along with DNS.
  • Processes: operations such as fork, vfork, subprocess execution, and waiting for processes.
  • Communication and events: pipes, events, and asynchronous polling.
  • Terminal and filesystem-related behavior: TTY support and current-directory operations.

The documented feature list does not by itself establish how every call behaves in a particular runtime version. Check the target runtime’s implementation and the module’s imports before relying on one of these features in deployment. Wasmer’s WASIX guide and the WASIX specification repository provide the project’s descriptions.

Does WASIX provide full POSIX compatibility?

No. The POSIX connection is about selected APIs and behaviors, not a promise that an arbitrary POSIX program can be recompiled unchanged or run on any WebAssembly runtime. Wasmer’s C documentation describes wasix-libc as a fork of wasi-libc that provides a subset of POSIX APIs for WebAssembly.

Whether a particular application works depends on more than its source language. Its system calls, libraries, compiler and standard-library target, ABI imports, runtime implementation, and granted host capabilities all matter. A module that uses networking, for example, also needs a runtime and execution environment that support and permit the required network access. See Wasmer’s C and WASIX documentation for its description of wasix-libc.

How does WASIX compare with WASI Preview 1 and newer WASI versions?

Interface What it means Compatibility point
WASI Preview 1 The older WASI ABI that WASIX extends. Preview 1 modules can run under Wasmer’s WASIX support, according to Wasmer; that does not imply every runtime supports WASIX-only imports.
WASIX Wasmer’s extension of the Preview 1 ABI with selected additional system capabilities. It aims to preserve compatibility with existing Preview 1 WASI code, a maintainer design goal. Verify the required imports and runtime support.
WASI 0.2 and 0.3 Newer steps in the separate WASI evolution. The WebAssembly/WASI project describes 0.2 as a modular collection of APIs defined with WIT and identifies 0.3 as the current preview in its project README. Do not assume a WASIX Preview 1 module automatically works with these newer interface generations; check runtime support and any required adapters.

The WASI project’s descriptions of its interface generations are in the WebAssembly/WASI project README. WASIX’s focus on extending Preview 1 is described by Wasmer and the WASIX maintainers.

How do you build a program for WASIX?

The toolchain depends on the language. Wasmer documents separate paths for Rust and C/C++; a build that targets plain WASI Preview 1 is not automatically a WASIX build.

Rust

  1. Install the documented tool with cargo install cargo-wasix.
  2. Build the project in release mode with cargo wasix build --release.
  3. Check the resulting module’s imports and test it with the runtime version and permissions intended for deployment.

C and C++

  1. Install Wasmer’s documented wasixcc compiler toolchain.
  2. Compile the program with wasixcc, following the toolchain’s options for the project and its dependencies.
  3. Confirm the resulting module’s imports and verify that the runtime implements them.

Wasmer also documents prebuilt Python, PHP, and JavaScript runtimes. For Go, its guide cautions that the standard GOOS=wasip1 GOARCH=wasm target is plain, single-threaded WASI Preview 1, not WASIX; the guide says that target lacks the WASIX sockets and subprocess features. Consult the current Wasmer WASIX documentation for the language-specific instructions and supported runtime details.

How do you tell whether a WebAssembly module targets WASI or WASIX?

Inspect the module’s imports. Wasmer’s guide identifies wasi_snapshot_preview1 as an import namespace associated with WASI and wasix_32v1 as one associated with WASIX. Import names are useful diagnostic evidence, not a guarantee that a particular runtime implements every imported function.

If execution fails with a missing-import error, check whether the module targets a different ABI than the runtime supports, or whether it imports a newer WASIX function that the selected runtime version does not implement. Then verify the compiler target and runtime version against the module’s actual imports. Wasmer explains these namespaces in its WASIX guide.

When should you choose WASIX?

Choose a target based on the application’s requirements and the environment where it will run, rather than on the POSIX label alone. Before committing to WASIX, check:

  • Required capabilities: Does the application need networking, threads, processes, terminal behavior, or another extension beyond its current WASI target?
  • Build support: Do the compiler, standard library, and dependencies target the ABI and features the application needs?
  • Runtime support: Does the specific runtime version implement the module’s imported functions?
  • Host permissions: Will the deployment environment grant access to resources such as networking when required?

WASIX is therefore a practical option when its Preview 1-based extensions fit the application and the Wasmer runtime environment is suitable. It is not a shortcut around porting work or a guarantee of runtime independence. If newer WASI interfaces are the target, verify compatibility or adapters for the actual module instead of assuming WASIX and newer WASI generations are interchangeable.
