Visual testing checks whether a web page or component still looks as intended by comparing a new screenshot with a previously reviewed reference image, called a baseline. A difference is a reason to investigate—not automatically a bug—because it may reflect either an unintended regression or an intentional design change.
How visual testing works
Visual testing adds a rendered-interface check to a web team’s regression testing. The typical cycle is:
- Choose a representative state. Open the page or component and establish the conditions you want to check, such as a viewport size and a particular UI state.
- Capture a checkpoint. Save a screenshot of that state. The first run usually creates the baseline if no reference image exists.
- Compare later captures. Subsequent runs compare the current screenshot with the accepted baseline and identify differences.
- Review the change. Decide whether the difference is a defect or an intentional update. Reject a defect and report it; accept an intentional change and save the new baseline.
- Repeat in your development workflow. Run checks consistently in CI or pull requests, and keep the rendering setup stable so environmental variation does not drown out useful changes.
Applitools documents this checkpoint, comparison, review, and accept-or-reject cycle in its visual testing overview. BrowserStack’s Percy documentation describes capturing snapshots, comparing them with approved baselines, and reviewing changes in builds.
What visual testing catches—and what it does not
A functional test can confirm that a button responds to a click while missing that the button is misplaced, styled incorrectly, hidden, or displaying the wrong text. Screenshot comparison can flag changes in rendered appearance that a DOM assertion may not describe.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Visual testing complements functional and accessibility checks; it does not establish on its own that a page works correctly, is usable, or is accessible. Treat a diff as evidence to review in context, not as an automatic verdict. Blindly updating a baseline can make a real regression part of the new expected state.
Start with Playwright Test
If your team already uses Playwright Test, its built-in screenshot assertion is a low-friction way to add visual checks without first adopting a separate managed service. The key API is await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot().

Minimal runnable example
In a Playwright Test project, create a test such as tests/homepage.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace https://example.com with the page you own or are authorized to test. On the first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare new captures against it. See the official Playwright visual comparisons documentation for setup and assertion options.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Accepting an intentional design update
After reviewing a legitimate visual change, update the expected screenshot from the project directory with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed image files in version control before committing them. Avoid using this command as a blanket fix for unexplained diffs: doing so can silently approve a defect.

Reduce noise and keep comparisons repeatable
Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the same environment for baseline creation and comparison. For useful signal:
- Run baseline and comparison jobs with consistent browser versions and host environments.
- Use stable test data and bring the page to the same state before capturing it.
- Control animations or other volatile content where appropriate; Playwright documents screenshot options and stylesheets that can hide changing elements during capture.
- Configure pixel-difference expectations deliberately. A looser threshold may suppress harmless rendering noise, but can also hide small real changes.
- Keep viewport and other relevant capture settings consistent with the baseline.
When a managed visual testing service may help
A managed workflow may suit teams that need broader rendering coverage or a shared review process beyond repository-managed screenshots. Product capabilities below are descriptions in vendor documentation, not independent findings about accuracy, speed, or return on investment.

Choose a workflow against your team’s needs
There is no independent head-to-head benchmark established here. Compare the workflow you need rather than assuming that a product’s feature description proves its results.
- Coverage: Do you need component or full-page checkpoints, desktop and mobile widths, or multiple browser renderings?
- Baseline review: Where will references live? Who reviews diffs, approves intentional changes, and needs access to change history?
- Repeatability and noise: Can you keep browser and operating-system conditions consistent? How will you handle animations, dynamic content, and volatile regions?
- Integration and operating effort: How does the option fit your existing test framework, version control, CI pipeline, and the people who will triage diffs?
- Cost and scale: Check current plan limits and pricing directly before committing; a comparative cost model is not established by the cited documentation.

If your immediate need is a screenshot rather than a reviewed visual-regression workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one API call. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a substitute for maintaining and reviewing visual baselines. Its documented options include full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport choices, and PDF output. Cookie-banner handling, popup removal, chat-widget removal, and other capture options can be turned off individually.
cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free.
