Video bitrate is how much encoded video data your encoder sends each second, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). For YouTube Live, choose the live-ingest recommendation for your incoming resolution, frame rate and codec—then make sure your upload connection can sustain the total stream bitrate while leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom.

What video bitrate means

An encoder compresses video into data and sends it to YouTube. Bitrate measures the amount of that encoded video data sent per second. A higher bitrate can carry more visual information, but it also needs more upload capacity; it is not automatically the best setting if your connection cannot sustain it.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different playback formats. The bitrate you set is for the video you send to YouTube, not a promise about the bitrate every viewer receives.

YouTube Live bitrate recommendations

The table below reproduces YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, in Mbps. Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate you send, and the column for the codec selected in your encoder. These are YouTube recommendations, not independent test results or guarantees of connection stability. The AV1/H.265 column combines those codecs as shown in YouTube’s table.

For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for incoming H.264 at 1080p60 and 12 Mbps for the AV1/H.265 column at that same mode. That difference is specific to YouTube’s table; it does not establish that every encoder or scene will perform identically at either rate.

Use YouTube’s live table rather than its upload-encoding table. Upload guidance concerns files submitted to YouTube; live guidance concerns an encoder feeding the live ingest. The workflows have different recommendations, including CBR guidance for live streams and variable bitrate guidance for uploads. YouTube transcodes live streams for playback.

How to choose a bitrate for your stream

  1. Choose resolution and frame rate. Match the mode to your content, audience and equipment. Higher frame rates can help with fast motion, but require support from the encoder and enough network capacity.
  2. Choose a supported codec. Find the codec actually selected in the encoder, then read the corresponding YouTube table column. Do not select a target from a different codec’s column.
  3. Check real upload capacity. Test outbound upload performance on the connection you will use. Download speed does not tell you whether the upload link can carry your stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and leaving 20% headroom.
  4. Budget for the whole stream. The stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. Audio and any other concurrent streams also use capacity, so do not allocate all available upload bandwidth to video.
  5. Lower the mode if capacity is short or variable. Reduce bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate; test again. A lower stable setting is a more practical choice than a recommendation your connection cannot sustain.
  6. Test the actual setup. Before going live to an audience, test with moving video and audio similar to the planned stream. Watch YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages during the test and while live.

A simple planning estimate is to reserve roughly one-fifth of measured upload capacity for headroom rather than assigning it all to the stream. A single speed test cannot guarantee stability, particularly on a shared or changing connection. YouTube notes that other users and devices on a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.

Encoder settings that matter alongside bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS transport and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. Check which controls your encoder exposes and follow the compatible settings for your chosen mode.

  • Ultra-low latency: Stay in the moment with ultra-low latency powered by USB 3.2 Gen 2, ensuring your broadcast and gameplay remain perfectly synchronized, delivering an immersive and responsive streaming experience.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists 128 Kbps stereo and 384 Kbps 5.1 audio in its advanced settings. These audio figures are separate from the video bitrate table, but audio still consumes bandwidth.
  • Picture format and codec options: YouTube’s guidance recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC and Rec. 709 for SDR. For HDR, it recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
  • Latency at 4K: YouTube says 2160p live streams cannot use its “improve for low latency” optimization and are set to normal latency. If low latency is a priority, weigh that trade-off before choosing 4K.

Common bitrate and connection problems

  • Stream health reports instability or the stream drops: The selected total bitrate may exceed available or consistent upload capacity, or the network may be shared. Test the real connection, reduce bitrate or output mode, and retest with headroom.
  • The picture looks less detailed than expected: Confirm that the incoming resolution, frame rate and codec match the settings you intended, and that the bitrate is appropriate for that mode. A higher bitrate alone cannot fix a mismatch or guarantee a particular viewer experience.
  • Encoder settings do not match YouTube’s recommendations: Verify CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds), a supported codec and RTMPS where available. Check encoder output and YouTube stream health rather than relying only on the values entered in a settings panel.
  • Audio or another stream competes for bandwidth: Include audio and concurrent traffic in the total upload budget, then leave the recommended headroom.
  • A wired connection still struggles: Ethernet can provide a useful wired connection, but a cable does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet service. Confirm actual upload performance and reduce the stream’s demand if needed.
