VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) is a low-latency codec that compresses image data for transport from a source device to a display. It helps a display connection carry demanding video modes within its available bandwidth; it is not a connector, cable, resolution, or display-panel technology. VESA is the Video Electronics Standards Association.
Why display connections use DSC
Higher-resolution images, faster refresh rates, and other demanding display modes require more data to travel from a computer or other source to a screen. A connection has a finite data rate. DSC reduces the amount of image data sent over that link, allowing supported modes to fit within its capacity.
VESA describes DSC as a way to extend the resolution supported over existing display connections, including applications involving HDR and 8K. Whether a particular setup can use a specific mode still depends on the interface, its data rate, and the capabilities of both connected devices.
How DSC works
The basic signal path is image source → DSC encoder → display link → DSC decoder → display. The source device encodes the image stream before sending it; the display decodes it for presentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
VESA’s 2014 description identifies design elements including delta pulse code modulation (DPCM), an Indexed Color History (ICH), entropy coding, and a rate buffer. In an implementation, picture-parameter information lets the decoder know details about the coded picture and compression settings. These describe the general approach, not a substitute for the applicable technical standard.
DSC is designed to have low latency and low complexity. In embedded and mobile applications, reducing interface data rate can also reduce system power, but that does not establish a particular battery-life improvement for any device.

Does DSC reduce image quality?
DSC is commonly described as visually lossless, not mathematically lossless. DisplayPort.org defines the term in observer-centered language: a typical observer, under typical viewing conditions, would in most cases not notice a difference or degradation compared with uncompressed video. That is a qualified perceptual claim, not a promise that every viewer will find every image identical.
VESA-member companies conducted visual testing during development, according to DisplayPort.org. The source does not establish a universal detection percentage, so a numerical probability of noticing compression should not be inferred.

Where DSC is used
DSC appears in several display-interface standards, not just DisplayPort. VESA’s codec overview identifies DSC 1.1 in embedded DisplayPort (eDP) and MIPI DSI, and DSC 1.2b in DisplayPort and HDMI. DisplayPort.org describes DSC as included for optional use in eDP 1.4, HDMI, and MIPI DSI.
Inclusion in a standard does not mean every port or product implements DSC. Actual support depends on the interface specification and the manufacturer’s implementation.

DSC versions and the 3:1 figure
- DSC 1.0: VESA and the MIPI Alliance announced its finalization and availability on April 22, 2014.
- DSC 1.2: VESA announced this version on January 27, 2016, describing it as backward compatible with DSC 1.1. VESA identified DisplayPort 1.4 as the first DisplayPort specification intended to use DSC 1.2.
- Up to 3:1: In its DisplayPort 1.4 announcement, VESA described DSC 1.2 transport as offering up to a 3:1 compression ratio. This is a version-specific capability statement, not a quality score or a guarantee that every product uses that ratio.
How to check whether DSC works in your setup
If a high-resolution or high-refresh-rate option is missing, DSC support may be relevant—but a connector’s shape or a general label such as DisplayPort or HDMI cannot confirm it by itself. NVIDIA’s compatibility guidance notes that the highest display selections may be unavailable when the graphics card and display do not support DSC over the relevant connection.
- Check the source: Look up DSC support for the graphics card, computer, or other device driving the display.
- Check the display: Confirm that the monitor or screen supports DSC for the intended input, rather than relying only on its advertised resolution or refresh rate.
- Check the exact connection: Verify support for the relevant DisplayPort, HDMI, eDP, or MIPI implementation and the port you plan to use.
- Check the target mode: Confirm that both products support the desired combination of resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, and HDR features. DSC support alone does not guarantee every combination.
For a particular mode, the source, display, and connection path must all support the required capabilities. A cable recommendation alone cannot establish end-to-end DSC compatibility.
