TypeScript is JavaScript with a static typechecking layer: it can flag many mistakes before a program runs, while JavaScript remains the language executed by the runtime. Its main transformation is not into a new runtime, but from typed source into JavaScript that browsers and other JavaScript environments can run.

What is TypeScript?

The TypeScript Handbook describes its goal as “a static typechecker for JavaScript programs”—a tool that checks code before it runs and verifies that the program’s types are correct. TypeScript is also commonly described as a programming language that builds on JavaScript, adding syntax for types and other development-time features.

For example, a type annotation can state that a function expects a number:

function double(value: number): number {
  return value * 2;
}

double("two");

The call passes a string where the function expects a number, so a TypeScript checker can report a type error before execution. This illustrates the intended check; it is not a report of a test. Type annotations help tools reason about the code, but they do not make JavaScript’s runtime behave differently.

Is TypeScript JavaScript?

TypeScript builds on JavaScript, but TypeScript-specific type information is for tooling and checking rather than a separate runtime. In the traditional TypeScript workflow, the compiler emits JavaScript, and the browser, server, or other JavaScript environment executes that output. The typechecker can catch certain mismatches ahead of time; it does not guarantee that a program is free of every bug or change JavaScript runtime semantics.

What does the TypeScript compiler do?

The compiler checks the program against its types and, in the traditional workflow, produces JavaScript from TypeScript source. This is the “alchemy” in the title: the typed source is transformed into JavaScript, not into a distinct TypeScript runtime. Project settings determine details of checking and output, so readers working in an existing project should consult its configuration rather than assume every project compiles the same way.

How should you learn TypeScript?

If you are new to programming

Start with JavaScript fundamentals before adding TypeScript. The official Handbook is aimed at programmers using TypeScript in everyday work, and it advises people who are new to programming to first build a foundation in JavaScript.

If you already know JavaScript

Use the TypeScript Handbook introduction to get oriented, then work through relevant chapters. The official documentation index also links to background-specific introductions, language references, configuration resources, and release notes. Treat the Handbook as a practical learning guide, not a complete formal specification.

TypeScript Programming Language - Software Engineer & Coder T-Shirt
  • TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
  • TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Programming TypeScript by Boris Cherny is an optional deeper resource. O’Reilly lists it as a 322-page intermediate-to-advanced book, published in May 2019 (ISBN 9781492037644). Its publication date makes it important to check that its version coverage and examples fit the TypeScript work you are doing now.

What changed with TypeScript 7.0?

On July 8, 2026, the TypeScript team announced TypeScript 7.0 as a Go-based native port. The team described it as “10x faster”; that figure is the team’s claim in its announcement, not an independently validated universal benchmark. See the TypeScript team’s TypeScript 7.0 announcement for its stated context, and check the official documentation and release notes for current release details.
