It is separate from True Tone on the display, which adjusts screen white balance to suit surrounding light. The flash name does not mean every iPhone uses identical flash hardware or a single documented algorithm.
What does True Tone flash do?
Apple describes True Tone flash as a way to illuminate dark scenes when taking photos with the rear-facing camera. Its stated effects and hardware details vary by model; Apple’s public descriptions do not set out one universal method for measuring scene color and controlling the LEDs. Apple’s 2016 developer presentation introduces the feature in the context of camera capture.
For iPhone 8, Apple said its quad-LED True Tone Flash with Slow Sync produced more uniformly lit backgrounds and foregrounds. That is Apple’s description of the iPhone 8 implementation, not a guarantee that every True Tone flash produces the same result in every scene. Apple’s iPhone 8 announcement provides that model-specific detail.
How is camera True Tone different from display True Tone?
They are different features that share a name. Camera True Tone flash illuminates a photo scene. Display True Tone adjusts the screen’s white balance to match surrounding light, which Apple described as making viewing more natural on iPhone 8. It does not describe the camera flash. Apple’s iPhone 8 announcement discusses the display feature separately.

How do True Tone flash implementations vary?
Standard True Tone flash
Apple uses True Tone flash as a feature name, but the cited materials do not establish that all iPhone models share the same flash hardware. Check the specifications for the exact model rather than assuming the feature is present. For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications, checked on October 4, 2026, list True Tone flash.
Adaptive True Tone flash on iPhone 14 Pro
Apple described the iPhone 14 Pro’s Adaptive True Tone flash as an array of nine LEDs that changes pattern based on the selected focal length. This is a specification for that model’s implementation, not a universal description of True Tone flash on other iPhones. Apple’s 2022 iPhone 14 Pro announcement gives the detail.

What is Retina Flash?
Retina Flash is a front-camera feature on supported devices: the display acts as the flash. Apple’s archived camera documentation says the display can briefly rise to as much as three times its usual maximum illuminance and vary its color output to achieve an effect similar to the rear-camera True Tone flash. That brightness figure applies to Retina Flash—not the rear-camera flash. Apple’s camera documentation describes the feature.

The name alone does not specify a universal color-measurement method, a Kelvin reading of the ambient light, a warm-and-cool LED mixing algorithm, or the number of color combinations available across iPhone models. Apple’s cited materials also do not support ranking photo quality between models or promising that flash will make every low-light image look more natural or accurate. Treat Apple’s effect descriptions as specific to the model and implementation being discussed.
