The Windows Startup folder is a Start Menu folder for shortcuts to apps you want to open automatically when you sign in. To open the folder for your account, press Windows key + R, enter shell:startup, and press Enter.
What the Windows Startup folder does
When an app shortcut is placed in the Startup folder, Windows can launch that app when that user signs in. It is one way to configure sign-in apps—not a master list of every mechanism that can start software automatically. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s guide to configuring startup applications describes the folder-based method.
Where to find the Startup folder
For the current user, the folder’s path is %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup. The Run command is the quicker way to open it without browsing through the profile folders.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type
shell:startup. - Press Enter. File Explorer opens the Startup folder for your account.

Use the folder when you want to add an app that is missing from Windows’ startup-app list, following Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance.

- Open the current-user Startup folder with
shell:startup. - Add a shortcut to the app you want Windows to launch. The folder is intended to hold app shortcuts.
- Sign out and sign back in to check whether the app opens.
How the folder differs from other startup options
Windows and apps may offer more than one place to configure sign-in behavior. Choose based on what the app supports and where you want to manage it.
- Windows Startup settings: Use the startup-app list when the app appears there and you want to manage its startup status in Windows.
- The app’s own settings: Some apps provide a launch-on-sign-in preference inside the app.
- Startup folder: Use a shortcut in the folder when the app is not listed and you want to configure it through File Explorer.
These routes can produce a similar outcome, but not every app appears in every configuration surface. Microsoft’s steps for the folder method are in its startup applications guidance.
