The tallest ordinary tree forms listed in the Minecraft Wiki are mega jungle trees, mega spruces, and mega pines, which can reach 31 blocks tall. To grow a large spruce or jungle tree, plant four matching saplings in a 2×2 square and give the tree enough light and room. The exact height a tree can reach depends on available space and may vary by game edition or version.
Which tree is tallest in Minecraft?
According to the Minecraft Wiki’s tree overview, the largest mega jungle trees, mega spruces, and mega pines reach 31 blocks tall. That is the listed maximum for these ordinary tree forms—not a claim that every tree of those types will grow to that height.
The same overview also uses a broader maximum of 30 blocks when describing tree heights. Since those figures differ by one block, treat 31 blocks as the overview’s explicit species-specific figure, not a guarantee for every edition or version. The available sources do not establish an edition-by-edition comparison.
How to grow a large spruce or jungle tree
- Choose four matching saplings. Use spruce saplings for a large spruce or jungle saplings for a large jungle tree; arrange them in a 2×2 square. The tree overview describes the four-sapling requirement, and the tree-farming tutorial provides practical guidance.
- Clear space around and above the saplings. Leave enough room for the chosen tree form to generate. A nearby obstruction or ceiling can prevent the growth check from succeeding or constrain the tree’s height.
- Provide suitable light and wait for growth. Saplings need adequate light as well as space. Bone meal can prompt a growth attempt, but it does not bypass failed light or clearance requirements.
Clearance is not just a matter of making a tall empty shaft: the tree needs space for the shape it generates. The Minecraft Wiki overview describes light and space as growth conditions, while the tree-farming tutorial discusses room for larger forms.

How do mega trees compare with Nether huge fungi?
| Type | Maximum stated height | Tree or tree-like structure? | Sapling arrangement | Clearance | Context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mega jungle tree | Up to 31 blocks, per the Minecraft Wiki tree overview | Ordinary tree | Four matching saplings in a 2×2 square for a large jungle tree, per the tree overview | Adequate space is required; obstructions can prevent or limit growth, per the tree overview and tree-farming tutorial | Exact biome availability is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Mega spruce | Up to 31 blocks, per the Minecraft Wiki tree overview | Ordinary tree | Four matching saplings in a 2×2 square for a large spruce tree, per the tree overview | Adequate space is required; obstructions can prevent or limit growth, per the tree overview and tree-farming tutorial | Exact biome availability is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Mega pine | Up to 31 blocks, per the Minecraft Wiki tree overview | Ordinary tree | Not stated in the cited overview as a separate instruction for mega pines. | Tree growth requires adequate space, per the tree overview. | Exact biome availability is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Nether huge fungus | Up to 27 blocks overall, according to a huge-fungus tutorial | Tree-like fungus, not an ordinary tree | Not stated in the cited tutorial as an ordinary sapling arrangement. | Not stated in the cited tutorial. | Nether; the height figure comes from a tutorial rather than a primary source. |
The fungus figure is a separate comparison: a huge fungus is a Nether structure, not a tree. Its 27-block figure comes from a tutorial and should not be treated as a directly equivalent, independently verified measurement of ordinary tree height.
