It defines a common set of interfaces intended to make software behavior more predictable across conforming systems; it does not prescribe one vendor’s complete operating-system implementation. SUS is closely related to POSIX, but POSIX compatibility alone does not grant permission to use the UNIX trademark.
What the Single UNIX Specification covers
The Open Group describes SUS as the standard against which the core interfaces of a UNIX operating system are measured. Its scope includes the base operating-system environment, networking services, windowing-system services, internationalization, and programming-language aspects. The core volumes are also part of POSIX and ISO/IEC 9945. The Open Group’s UNIX Standard page provides its current overview.
In practical terms, SUS gives software developers a defined interface to target rather than requiring software to depend on the internal design of one vendor’s system. A conforming environment can therefore support more predictable portability. The specification does not mean every UNIX-like system has been tested or certified.
How SUS relates to POSIX
POSIX and SUS share a substantial standards foundation. The Austin Group develops and maintains core open-systems interfaces for POSIX.1, ISO/IEC 9945, and the core of SUS. Those interfaces include services expressed through the C programming language, a command interpreter, and common utilities. The Base Specifications Issue 7 preface explains this relationship.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction often comes down to XSI. XSI identifies the POSIX portions that address the extension added to support SUS. So POSIX is not simply another name for every SUS requirement: the XSI requirements identify additional SUS-supporting provisions. The preface also says POSIX.1-2017 codifies the common existing definition of the UNIX system. See the Issue 7 preface.
Current SUS edition and UNIX certification standard
The Open Group’s UNIX Standard page identifies UNIX V7 as its latest certification standard, aligned with SUS Version 4, 2018 Edition. Separately, POSIX.1-2024, also called The Open Group Base Specifications Issue 8, is technically identical to Issue 8 and incorporates appropriate parts of SUS Version 5. That standards publication does not establish that the UNIX certification program has moved to a Version 5 certification release. Keep the evolving base-standard publication distinct from the certification label. The Open Group lists its current UNIX certification standard; the Issue 8 rationale describes the POSIX.1-2024 relationship.

POSIX compliance is not UNIX trademark certification
Technical compatibility and trademark authorization are separate questions. The Open Group says a supplier may use the UNIX trademark for a product after the product passes applicable certification test suites and the supplier agrees to the Certification Program terms. It issues an Open Brand Certificate for each registered certified product and lists the product in its Directory of Registered Products. The Open Group explains the certification and licensing requirements here.
To check a particular system, look up the exact registered product and configuration in the current Directory of Registered Products. Do not treat “Unix-like,” source compatibility, or a vendor’s own description as proof that a product is certified. Whether a given Linux distribution or other specific system meets a standard is a product- and evidence-specific question, not something settled by the SUS definition alone.
