There is no evidence-backed universal winner. Microsoft Edge is a practical default: Microsoft says Edge updates on Windows 10 version 22H2 will continue until at least October 2028, and it offers optional Enhanced Security modes. Mozilla also says Firefox will continue receiving updates and security patches on Windows 10. Whichever browser you choose, keep it updated. More importantly, browser choice cannot replace security updates for Windows itself.
What is the safest browser for Windows 10?
Choose a browser that its vendor is still updating for your Windows version, install updates promptly, and enable its available protections. Edge is a defensible default for Windows 10 version 22H2 based on Microsoft’s published update horizon. Firefox is another supported option according to Mozilla. The sources cited here do not establish a controlled, current head-to-head security test, so they cannot support a claim that one browser blocks more threats than another.
For your own choice, consider four things: the vendor’s current support for your Windows edition, the browser’s protective settings, compatibility with the sites and accessibility tools you use, and your privacy and account preferences.

Yes, for Windows 10 version 22H2: Microsoft Learn says Edge and the WebView2 Runtime will continue receiving updates until at least October 2028. Microsoft says those Edge updates do not require enrollment in Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU). This browser update commitment does not extend Windows 10’s operating-system support.

Consider Edge Enhanced Security
Edge offers optional Enhanced Security in Balanced and Strict modes. Microsoft says the feature reduces exposure to some memory-related vulnerabilities by disabling just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation and enabling additional operating-system protections. The documentation does not quantify the protection or guarantee that every site will work normally.
Balanced is a reasonable starting point for ordinary browsing. Strict is an option if you are willing to troubleshoot occasional compatibility problems. To enable it, open Edge and go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Enhance your security on the web, then select a mode. Labels may vary with browser versions.

Does Firefox still get security updates on Windows 10?
Mozilla’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance says Firefox will continue receiving updates, security patches, and performance improvements on Windows 10. It identifies Firefox ESR 140 and ESR 153 as supporting Windows 10. Mozilla’s guidance was last updated August 30, 2026; check its current release information for any later support changes rather than treating this as an indefinite commitment.

What about Google Chrome?
Google’s Chrome Enterprise system requirements list Windows 10 and say no Chrome deprecation release is scheduled, while showing October 2025 as Microsoft’s deprecation date. That page entry is not a firm promise of Chrome updates through a specific future date. Keep Chrome current and consult Google’s live requirements before relying on it for ongoing Windows 10 support.

Is Windows 10 safe to use after support ended?
Windows 10 Home and Pro standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says PCs will continue to work, but those editions no longer receive regular security updates from Microsoft. Without operating-system fixes, newly discovered vulnerabilities can remain unpatched, increasing exposure to malware and viruses. An updated browser cannot provide the missing Windows fixes.
This date applies to Windows 10 Home and Pro, not automatically to every Windows 10 edition. Enterprise, LTSC, and IoT editions can have different support lifecycles, so check the lifecycle for your exact edition.

What should you do to reduce risk?
- Check your Windows edition and version. Open Settings > System > About to find Windows specifications, including edition and version. Confirm the applicable support lifecycle rather than assuming the Home and Pro date covers your edition.
- Update your browser. Use its built-in update check or visit its official support information. Edge and Firefox have the Windows 10 support statements described above; Google’s published requirements do not establish a dated post-2025 Chrome update commitment.
- Turn on browser protections. If using Edge, consider Enhanced Security Balanced mode; try Strict only if its potential site compatibility trade-offs suit you.
- Check for a supported Windows upgrade. Use Windows Update to see whether your PC can move to Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance recommends upgrading an eligible PC, replacing a device that cannot run Windows 11, or using ESU where eligible.
- Review ESU eligibility if you cannot upgrade now. Microsoft says consumer ESU can provide protection for eligible Windows 10 devices until October 12, 2027. Eligibility and enrollment depend on the device and circumstances; check Microsoft’s current instructions.
- Keep layered protections in place. A browser is only one part of security. Continue using appropriate antivirus protection, install software updates, be cautious with downloads and links, and secure your accounts.
If Windows 10 is the bigger risk
Check free Windows 11 upgrade eligibility first, then review ESU if you cannot move to a supported release yet. If the device cannot run a supported Windows version, replacing it with a Windows 11-compatible computer is another path. Buying a new computer does not by itself make browsing secure; keep its operating system and browser updated and use sound security practices.
