On classic Intel quad-pumped Front Side Bus (FSB) systems, the advertised FSB number is the effective data-transfer rate, not the underlying bus clock. Divide the advertised rate by four: 1066 MHz FSB corresponds to a 266.67 MHz clock, and 1333 MHz FSB corresponds to about 333.33 MHz. Those figures describe the bus, not the CPU’s core frequency.
What “real FSB frequency” means
FSB means Front Side Bus. Intel describes it as an old subsystem. On classic Intel platforms, the familiar FSB labels count transfers per second using a quad-pumped bus: four transfers occur per physical clock cycle. As a result, the number commonly called “FSB MHz” is effectively a transfer-rate label, while the physical clock runs at one quarter of that rate.
Transfer rates are more precisely expressed in megatransfers per second (MT/s), although older specifications often label them MHz. So 1066 “MHz FSB” means approximately 1066 MT/s, not a 1066 MHz physical clock.
Convert the advertised rate to the bus clock

Physical bus clock = advertised FSB transfer rate ÷ 4
| Advertised FSB label | Physical bus clock | Effective transfer rate |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | 100 MHz | 400 MT/s |
| 533 | About 133 MHz | 533 MT/s |
| 667 | About 167 MHz | 667 MT/s |
| 800 | 200 MHz | 800 MT/s |
| 1066 | About 266.67 MHz (often rounded to 266 MHz) | 1066 MT/s |
| 1333 | About 333.33 MHz (often rounded to 333 MHz) | 1333 MT/s |
| 1600 | 400 MHz | 1600 MT/s |
Intel’s Intel 5400 Chipset Technical Product Specification lists 266 MHz with 1066 MHz and 333 MHz with 1333 MHz. Intel’s processor documentation records the corresponding bus-speed encodings as approximately 100, 133, 167, 200, 267, 333, and 400 MHz; the exact encoding explains small differences from rounded labels.

FSB frequency is not CPU frequency
The bus clock and CPU core clock are separate quantities. For a system expressed in terms of a base clock and multiplier, the basic relationship is:
CPU core frequency = base clock × CPU multiplier
For example, a 200 MHz base clock and a 10× multiplier produce a nominal 2,000 MHz (2 GHz) core frequency. That example illustrates the arithmetic; it does not identify a particular processor. Intel’s explanation of processor base frequency likewise relates motherboard clock to the processor’s internal clock rate.

Do not treat the FSB transfer-rate label as the base clock in that calculation. Nor should the multiplier alone be taken as a guarantee of operating speed: voltage, thermal conditions, and platform limits affect whether a changed clock or multiplier is stable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does FSB matter on a modern Intel processor?
FSB is primarily a legacy-platform term, not a universal description of how current Intel processors connect to the rest of the system. Intel identifies QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) and Ultra Path Interconnect (UPI) as newer bus-subsystem technologies used where FSB is not used. The exact interconnect depends on the processor and platform, so an old FSB figure should not be applied to a modern system without checking its specifications.

Even on systems that do specify an FSB rate, frequency alone does not determine performance. Intel notes that performance also depends on factors such as instructions per cycle (IPC), processor features, process technology, architecture, and effective clock speeds. For a meaningful comparison, identify the processor and chipset, then distinguish the physical bus clock, transfer rate, CPU multiplier and core frequency, memory or chipset ratios, and interconnect generation.
